jacob95 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Hey guys, I was wondering if the Champion Extremes are REALLY worth the extra $100+? I like the looks of the 734 Champion and the 744 Champion Extreme. Is the 744 worth the extra $100 over the 734? Thanks Jacob Quote
Arv Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Its really up to you. I feel comfortable with the Champion covering bottom contact presentations, but I can certainly tell a difference when I'm using my Extreme. To me, I wouldn't spend the extra $100 which is why most of my rods were bought used (I bought my Extremes for less than the cost of a new Champion). I definitely like the extra sensitivity and upgraded components though. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 1, 2014 Super User Posted April 1, 2014 It's entirely relative to your budget. I personally think it is worth it but I always buy the rods during sales for 260$ give or take. the DX lines are slightly faster than their counterpart in the champion series i.e 733 vs 743. the exception is the 735 vs 745 /w the 735 having an xf tip. some people don't feel the price if warranted but I feel it is. it's really only something you can decide when using them. jacob95 Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 I really wish I could rent both of them and fish them and buy the one I want haha!! Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 1, 2014 Super User Posted April 1, 2014 If you are using it for bottom contact and feel presentation i feel its worth it it. Anything along the lines of frogs, swim jigs, spinnerbaits ir anything moving the savvy or champ is more than adequate. Quote
jacob95 Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 Maybe I'll pick up one of each and sell off the one I don't want. I know Dobyns have good resale values. Or I could just find one used. Quote

Personally I would buy one used. If you have the kind of money where you would be buying two rods to resell one, I'd just go for the DX. While Dobyns rods do usually sell well, IMO, its not worth it to buy one with the strict intention of selling it as I don't think you'd get enough money back to make it worth your while. If you look around and are patient, you can usually find the Champions from 150-180 and DXs from 200-250 Quote
jacob95 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Well I don't have the money to buy both. I have the money for a Champion but if I'm selling myself short by using a Champion then I'll get a DX if it's not worth it I'll get a Champion. I don't want to buy the Champion and then a year down the road say "Hey I should have bought a DX". You know what I mean? Quote
Grantman83 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 If your main use is going to be feeling based presentations, go dx. If you are going for an all purpose rod including moving baits, go champion. I have mostly dx's because I have been lucky enough to get good deals and because many of my rods do double duty and I don't mind paying for the extra lightness and sensitivity. The champions are no slouch in the sensitivity department. Just because they aren't DX Level doesn't mean you won't feel every rock, pebble and twig. Some of the extra cost is the painted reel seat, some lightness etc. Quote

Nothing wrong with owning multiple rods for one technique, besides many can be used for more than one purpose. Quote

If I get something with a notion that I should have waited to get something else, I wind up unsatisfied and wind up getting what I should have really gotten in the first place. Quote
jacob95 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 DX it is then guys. 744 Sound like a good rod for all purpose but mainly jigging and Texas rigging in weeds, lily pads and drop offs? Quote
curtis9 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I had the same debate with myself last year. Ended up buying a 743 and 744. I use the 743 for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and small texas rigs. The 744 for larger texas rigs and jigs. The 744 should be a great rod for what you want to do. Quote
jacob95 Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Because I'm dedicating most of this spring to learning how to jig fish and I'm thinking the 744 would be killer for that. Pair it up with a Curado I or a ***. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 2, 2014 Super User Posted April 2, 2014 Haven't used an Extreme, but I wouldn't buy another Champion, so I'd say it's worth the extra. The Champion felt dead to me. The Kistler KLX feels far more sensitive to me for a lot less money. Quote
