starcraft1 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Frist of all, Boat = 98' skeeter zx202dc Motor = 98' 200 h.p. Yamaha - fresh rebuild to around 215 h.p. or so, 20 hrs. running time at all tac. speeds = 5mph to 60mph so far with much more in it. 600 rpm to 4500 rpm. red line around 5750 to 6000? Prop = 26 - 3 blade Problem, Hole shot, always a slight to heavy stall to the point of stalling the motor out. Was told it might be that the prop has to much pitch or plugs need to be bigger? Please keep in mind, "I can build you the best mech. shop you could dream up, just don't ask me to work in it!" Any help? Quote
livetofish28 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 We are looking to get a new prop for ours we have the same problem on my 99 stratos 273 vindicator and 89 yamaha (fully rebuilt from the ground up in 2007) were running 59 mph at 4700 rpms at WOT we have a 25 pitch 3 blade and believe the problem is too much prop were looking at getting the mercury to yamaha hub kit and getting the mercury trophy prop in 23 it should improve hole shot and stability both problems for us. If not, until you can see your rpms at WOT then you can't say for sure if it's a prop issue or the motor. What prop are you running would be helpful too. Roughly you gain or lose 500 rpms per pitch you move (move up your rpms go down, move down and your rpms go up) . I'd try a 23 pitch. Go to a dealer and try before you go out and buy just for the heck of it. Different companies and different prop lines will run slightly different from one another so shop around. Quote

We have looked around a bit and are going to be borrowing a 23 pitch merc trophy of of his 150 V-max when he gets a new one. That has been the prop we've been recommended and if we like that one that will probably be the prop we have a problem with chine walking and hole shot and that prop is one of the most stable props on the market and hope that will be the problem the marina we always launch at offered to let us try a bunch of different props to see which one we like best. A lot of peoples with this boat and a 150 on the back run mid 60s so we will see what happens Tight lines Andrew Quote

Chine walking isn't always the props fault, it can sometimes be cause by an unbalanced hull. Take a look at how you have things stored, and try to balance it out. Your other option would be going to a 4 blade. They've got considerably more grip and that should help get you out of the hole a bit quicker as well. You'll lose just a hair on upper end speed, but going a few miles an hour and doing it safely is much more important than that little bit of extra speed. Quote

Super User Way2slow Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 I'm a bit confused here. Are we talking about a problem with StarCraft1 has with a 98 Yamaha 200, or are we talking about a problem with a 89 Yamaha 150? If StarCraft1 is the one needing help, then livetofish28 needs to start his on thread for help. Trying to play ping pong between two different problems in the same thread ain't gonna cut it. Anyway, for the original post by StarCarft1 and the Yamaha 200, the first thing I would do is a linc and sinc. If still having the problem and if the motor has adjustable low speed jets, you need to fatten them up about 1/8 turn and try it. If both those fail, the carbs need to be cleaned. It does not matter what size prop you are running, the motor should never bog and stall out. Yes, too much pitch can make you never get on plane, but the motor will keep plowing and trying, it will not stall out. That's totally a fuel/air mixture or ignition/timing problem. Not the prop. Now, not saying you don't have a prop problem, but you have an engine problem that has to be fixed first. Quote
starcraft1 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Got me a little confused also? Called a friend who has a 200 on his triton and he told me a 25 should do the trick, 20' boat, 12" jack plate, 200 h.p. The Yamaha book says a 25 pitch - 15 1/8 diameter should do? Going to Redding (N. Ca.) next week to try a few out. All I see right now is $$$$$$$ signs staring at me! Going to be making a lot of jigs for that prop! Sure glad I got a heck of a deal on the boat & trailer $1500 because I've put in over $8,000 into it since! Elect., T.M., motor rebuild, trailer brakes, lights, wiring, receiver hitch, it seems to go on and on. Like my wife says, "it'll be better than a new one when your finished" Hope so! Thanks for the help. P.S. 4500 rpm's is not WOT, just as fast as I wanted to take it for now. When it's all said and done it should red line around 5700 to 5800. Thanks again Quote

Super User J Francho Posted April 1, 2014 Super User Posted April 1, 2014 Yep, you need get a clean bill of health, then start doing sone prop slip calculations to get an idea of what prop will work best for your purpose and hull. Again, you won't be able to capture baseline numbers for the calculations until you resolve the engine issue. Quote
