Super User roadwarrior Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/micro-guides.html I have several rods with micro guides and frankly, I cannot perceive any difference. What say you? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Nor can I. They are harder to string with my eyes. I don't notice a difference in casting distance although they are suppose to cast further. I don't have a good enough "feel" to notice the extra sensitivity they are suppose to give. Plus I like the looks of regular guides better. Quote
dave Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I had two rods with spiral wrapped micro guides. They would cast great. Pitching...not so great, not sure why. The custom builder that built one of them, said he re-wraps rods for bass fisherman often, with the same issue. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Impossible to measure the difference between 'micro' and 'standard' unless they are built on absolutely identical blanks, which is pretty much impossible. If this is done, the micro rod wil feel crisper and recover faster. 2 Quote
Diggy Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I can do a test this week and check because I have a 7ft mh carbonlite micro and my co worker has the same rod in standard. I can swap my reel between both the the same bait and settings and see if there is any "difference" I did notice less fouling or line wrapping on my micro with braid, but Id like to try a k-series guide to see if it alleviates all of the wrapping probs Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Listen to Aaron video on this site main page. I have 3 custom jig/worm rods with micro guides about 2 1/2 years now and really like them. I don't use braided line and use 10 to 16 lb FC line on these rods without any negative issues to date. I am very careful with my rods and the micro guides are tiny and take some TLC in storing and laying on the deck, don't step on them! Tom 1 Quote
Preytorien Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I have a Carbonlite with microguides I have a Shimano Crucial with standard guides It might be me, but I think I get just a bit more distance with the microguides, especially on 3/8oz or less lures. Quote
BobP Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Every rod fad seems to include "it casts farther" in the description. I've never experienced that for myself and don't care whether a rod will cast 5 ft farther because of the type of guides or the guide spacing/pattern. I do care about sensitivity for rods that I use for "touchy-feely presentations" (jigs, T-rigs, C-rigs). But line type, rod balance, and how you hold the rod have more influence on sensitivity than any guide configuration I've used. Micro guides weigh less and make for a lighter rod tip, which can help you balance your rod/reel combo. Otherwise, I'm skeptical about claims. JMHO Quote
mjseverson24 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I like the micro guides as I don't use long leaders to connect 2 lines (except spinning). I don't necessarily like them for the added distance, but I do for the weight savings and balance, which makes the rod feel more sensitive... they are more easily damaged so there are downsides as well. Super User WRB Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Just wanted to add that our lakes are drinking water quality, very clean and it doesn't freeze here! Micro guides would be a pain if the water is dirty or freezes. Tom Quote
Lip 'em! Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I just bought my first micro guide rod this winter and so far i can tell no difference, except for the fact that rod gloves are much more prone to blowing off of them when running down the lake. Lol Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Impossible to measure the difference between 'micro' and 'standard' unless they are built on absolutely identical blanks, which is pretty much impossible. If this is done, the micro rod wil feel crisper and recover faster. X2 The reason they're seen as a fad is because manufacturers do not use them correctly and make misleading representations such as the further casting claim. I don't understand why people pay big bucks for lightweight blanks but don't mind loading them down with heavier than needed guides. The difference may not be night and day, but why not squeeze all you can out of the setup? 1 Quote
TrapperJ Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 No idea i just like the looks myself and probably helps on weight a little. Until my eyes go, micro for me. Regular guides just seem insanely large anymore. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 1, 2014 Super User Posted April 1, 2014 We have dirty water, it freezes, and whatever else you can think of. I have a handful of both regular and micros, and I cannot tell a difference between the two, other than the obvious size difference. I'm sure the weight difference has a positive effect on balance as well. Quote
