Super User slonezp Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Looking for a handheld spotlight. Any reliable brands? How many candlepower do I really need? Halogen or LED? There's a HUGE difference in pricing. I don't want to pay $200 if I can get away with $20, and don't want to pay $20 if it won't last. Quote
MacP Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I can't get on ebay at work, but I can show you the lights you need. 3-5W with waterproof aluminum housing and mount or grip for about $30.00 each. Wire up inline switch and yoo should be good to go. I've got several of the lights, I just can't link you to them. Crazy bright too. There are some targeted to cavers with a cordered rechargable battery pack (20 hour use) for about $50. They are really nice. As bright as any two car headlamps. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 I prefer one with the Blue in the lens, and a 50 watt bulb. Usually they rate them at 500,000 CP for the size I like. I don't like those with the big lens and rated at some ungodly CP number, they are just too big and cumbersome to have in the boat. I have not tried any of the LED lights, because so far, I've never found an LED light that I really liked the type light and beam they produce. Oh well, good luck on finding one like I like. I guess with this LED generation, there's not much available that's not led. Those with the little blue in the lens seems to work better on the water for me. Mine is probably 15 years old, so I couldn't find anything like it now. Quote
TRYTOFISH Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 How due compare candle power to Lumens? say a 1 million candle power is equivelent to how many hundred or thousand lumens? Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Rather than me try to explain it, read this. http://www.energybooks.com/pdf/D1150.pdf About all I can tell you is lumens are the total light a lamp will put out, candle power is the concentrated amount of light a light will put out. For a room, lumens is great, for a spot light, you want the candle power or candela because one candle power in a spot light is a hellavalot of lumens. Also, they can play all kinds of games with numbers between candle power and lumens. The folks pushing their LED lights can make those lumens numbers sound great and anything a spot light will do but when it comes to useable light from the LED and the Halogen spot light, I've not seen an LED that has a light I would take over my old 50 watt halogen. Yes, they have some with a very strong beam but there is just something about the light and the laser affect the beam has that does not compare and does not illuminate a distant object the way the halogen does. I don't have this exact model but I have a couple that are the same brand, one is a spotlight that takes 4c batteries and the other is a floodlight that takes 3c batteries. Mine were around $20 at HD and THEY BLOW MY 4D CELL MAGLIGHT AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!http://t.homedepot.com/p/Defiant-ArmorMax-3D-Tactical-Flashlight-809-3731-D/203657321/ Quote

I can't find the specific lamps I have, I'll keep looking. I worked in a plant that made the copper for cree, quality was a priority. Only thing I can add is I have a 500K candle watt spot light and it doesn't seem like enough. Go for a million Quote

Super User Way2slow Posted April 2, 2014 Super User Posted April 2, 2014 I just don't like the physical size of those mega cp lights. Mine stays in the boat and storage space is limited. I tried those large lights and for what little they get used, I had rather have the space. If you are like me, if it doesn't stay in the boat, it's never in the boat when you need it. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 2, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 2, 2014 I'll keep it at the house in Wisconsin because it's the only place I need it. There's a narrow stretch of river about 2 miles long and the moonlight doesn't penetrate thru the trees and bluffs. There's enough light here for me to get around at night most of the time. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 2, 2014 Super User Posted April 2, 2014 Since you're going in fresh, no less than 1 million cw power Quote

Since I am a flashlight nerd I suggest you visit http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/content.php and see what they recommend. I personally use an older halogen model on our pontoon boat that gets around 15mil candle power. Actually got the older model of this one for $20 new ( http://www.gemplers.com/product/172478/Handheld-Spotlight-Thor-X-Colossus#TAB-REVIEWS) I can hit over 4 city blocks. I have a quark aa2 turbo (https://www.foursevens.com/products/flashlights/Turbo ) that has 246 lumens and is more than enough to light my way. I also have a zebralight h51 headlamp to use in the morning to load the boat etc. Buy the best flashlight you can afford. My quark is water proof and pretty d**n strong, I'm never worried about it breaking. Quote

You serious Clark? Whats the status of the Chain in terms of ice and possible fish kill? So far the reports up by my place haven't shown anything really terrible (yet). Still a ton of ice though. 15-20inches Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 3, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 3, 2014 Don't know yet. My son and his buddy were on the river this past Sunday, below McHenry dam. The river is wide open but the channels are still frozen. Water was 37*. He's heading up to the Chain this weekend, ice or no ice to at least check things out. His first tourney with his buddy is on the 13th. Our clubs first is on the 27th. I'd head out there this Sunday if I knew for a fact it was open. I have to make sure the new 1198 and Ipilot Link works and figure out how to use it before the 27th. It's a long drive to find out I can't launch. Quote

Well if it helps you any, I was by Bangs Lake on March 29th and it was still frozen solid, so I'd imagine everything else up that way is still locked up. Unless we get an incredible heat way across WI/Northern IL , we may be iced out for WI opener. Launch your boat off 90 down on the Fox. I'll fish with you for a few hours. Quote
