If I had $1200 and was starting from scratch, I would follow RW's advice above.  Two great setups, maybe three,  and fill the gaps the following year.

I would go with

G. Loomis 783 GLX and a Shimano Chronarch 51e > This set up will do just about anything

G. Loomis 853 GLX JWR and a Shimano Chronarch 201e>  Everything softplastic

The following year I would pick up a crank bait rod and reel with a slow retrieve and a heavy general purpose rod for punching the thick stuff with a round reel

The next year a spinning finesse set up and deep crank bait rod and reel set up.

After that I would call it a day.

This thread was started back in 2014 and the original poster has not been active since. Still interesting to see what $1200 would get you a year later.

No doubt the gentleman has been fishing his new rods for a year, but that won't stop any of us from still making suggestions.  :teeth:  Seen it many times when a poster will ask what to buy and later in the thread tell you what he finally decided to buy (and did buy).  Yet people keep on making suggestions anyway.....apparently not reading each reply before posting.  I saw how old it was, but posted another reply anyhooo.  :eyebrows:

I can help you in the real department, Buy all lews bb1 pro series you can get them on ebay new for 150 bucks. I was a huge shimano guy , I had known about lews for a while but thought the cheap price tag meant crappy reel, I was wrong . I sold all my shimano reels and bought lews bb1 pro series with graphite handle it's light and outcast and out performs any reel I have ever owned including the shimano Calais dc that I paid around 650 bucks for. If there is a better reel out there I would love to know about it
