RippinLips4 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 if you had $1,200 to spend on 5 rods and reels what would they be? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 Couldn't say which five, specifically, off the top of my head, but they would include Shimano reels, probably JDM models, and for rods, Cumaras, or Megabass rods. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 well that leaves you with $240 per set up. if you go for mid range reels in the 150$ range that's 750 for 5 reels and you are left /w 450$ for 5 rods. you can find curado G's, Tatulas and T3B's for around 100-110 each so that leaves you 700 give or take for 5 rods. if you stay /w those reels you're looking at something like 5 13 omens, mojos, carbonlines, etc if you want 5 set ups. Alpha Male Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I would say St. Croix premiers for reaction baits and avids for others. Reels I like would be abu garcia, daiwa, lews, and BPS. Quote

My friend has sold his some things and was looking to buy some rods and reels he said he was looking at rods in the 150 range rods so he might have to mark it down to 4 rods and reels. I should just tell him to join BR lol. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 30, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Phenix X10 and X13 casting rod. Phenix M1 heavy 3 Curado I or E reels I know you said 5 but those would do me just fine. Mike Mike Quote

bflp3 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I'd probably get some Black *** and Elite Tech Smallmouth rods and some Daiwa Tatulas, Shimano Curado I, and Lew's Tournament Pros for casting reels, Daiwa Lexa and Shimano Symetre for spinning reels. 1 Quote

Those reels will set you back about $200, pro qualifiers on sale $70 each($210). reels = $410 for baitcasters rods = $580 for rods 1 pfluegar president spinning reel - $60 ----- $1050, $450 left to spend on essentials. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 Personally I'd be looking at Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth series for 3 of the rods....a 6'10 MF, 6'10" MH-MF and the 6'9" MXF. I don't have any experience with the new HMG, but have been told they are very nice rods for the money. The HMGs would save about $30 a rod, and the 7' MF, 7" MHF and 7'2" MMF would be my choices. Got to tell you I handled a couple Quantum Escalades at Dick's ($99.99) and really liked them. Very light. Nice looking, too. The Quantum Escalade reel is the same price. Specs on the reel read very good for the price. Not sure if I would like the Flippin Switch....one piece aluminum frame and gear side cover, brass gears, dual brake control, 7.0:1 ratio, 16 lbs of drag, nice blue color and comes in either hand. I picked up a used T3 1016H and like it a lot. At $198.88 on sale it would still be too high for your friend, but if the T3 Ballistic ($109.88 on sale) is anywhere near as good, it would be my first choice for new reels. If he plans on 6 combos, then forget new Shimanos. Personally I am not afraid to buy used. There have been several Fuegos is good shape in the classifieds. These are great reels, imo Just today I saw an ad for Gen 1 Premiers for either $100 or $110. I paid a bit more than that for mine, and feel I got a good deal. It is another very good reel. At that price it is practically a steal. Other new reels to look at would be one of the Lews....and the PQ which is another great option....so I have read. *** rods are very nice as well, but I am one of the few people who don't like it for one-handed casting, but since I normally use two, it doesn't bother me. I get to enjoy an excellent rod for the money anyway. Quote

Super User Tywithay Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 I would definitely search for good prices, or wait for the next big sale. Might even wait until TW has their gift card sale for fathers day and buy 15% off gift cards, then use the gift cards during the 4th of july sale to double up my 15% again. You could get $1380 worth of gift cards for $1200, so you've added to your budget. Wait for the next 15% off sale and you can turn that $1380 into over $1500 worth of gear in the end. It helps to savvy when putting together a budget. 1 Quote
zachb34 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I would get four citica E's about $400 probably less four *** blacks $400 and a chronarch ci4/Phenix M1 on sale Quote
Stingray23 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I would wait for a discount from TW and buy all *** rods and reels. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 5 Shimano Crucial Rods (about $650 for 5 if you look for deals) and 5 Shimano Reels (You can get some older Citicas or E series Curados for about $90 to $130 on some auction sites and keep an eye on the Flea Market here, some awesome deals come up) Stick to Citica and above for baitcasters and Saro and above for spinners. 2 spinning outfits and 3 baitcasting outfits should cover about 99% of your bass fishing techniques. 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 two evergreen rods He'd have to find used ones. Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Well the endurance's have free shipping. They knocked $20 off each of the 2 I ordered a few weeks ago but then I had to pay shipping. Still saved me $20 total. So $139.99 shipped is what I got them for. I believe Ron includes shipping also on his products. So $110 shipped for the reels also. So you did perfect sir. Also an excellent choice of a lineup. Quote
