Did you ever see a bird fly straight down? I am sitting on my back porch and just saw this bird drop about 40 ft. straight down. I actually thought it was falling until it landed on another limb.

Yup. I watch the hawks at work do it a lot.

At nearly 70 yrs old, I thought I had seen everything. Oh well, wrong again...lol.

I watched a falcon catch a barn swallow out of the air once. I never saw the falcon, just watching the swallows dart around when a streak came straight down from above and slammed that little bird to the ground. As hard as the falcon hit that swallow it was probably dead before it even touched the ground. I've seen birds dive straight down to get a baitfish below the surface also, especially pelicans.

Hootie, I have seen birds of prey fly straight down into the water or they pulled up at right before they hit the ground.

I have never seen other birds fly straight down.

I've seen a hawk come straight down on a bird that was at the feeder in the back yard.  We removed the feeder.

I know I never said, but it was a woodpecker.
