Right now I have a HDS-5 GEN 2 on my console with I don't even know what at the trolling motor but its not good...  Cabelas is running a pretty good deal on Lowrances right now so I'm going to buy the HDS-7 GEN 2 with side scan and don scan...  My question is what do you guys think would be better; putting the bigger screen on the trolling motor where I spend most of the time and leaving the 5 on the console or putting the larger screen on the console and moving the 5 to the trolling motor????

youre going to want the side scan imaging at the console so you can idle and cover a lot of water and see whats down there while running your big motor. But Im the type to have my bigger better unit up front at the trolling motor. i fish erie a lot and i stare at my graph all day. i have an HDS 7 at the front and Console. I never use side scan at the trolling motor but its a huge feature i use when im looking at flats and ledges while im idling. to maximize the use of your units your going to want the hds 5 at the front and the 7 at the console even tho you be spending more time staring at the 5

Move the smaller unit up front, the larger scanning unit needs the transducer transom mounted, the head unit should be consul mounted.

I was under the understanding that I can run an Ethernet cable from one to the other and then both have side and down scan...  Is that not right??  I thought thats how it works and thats what I was told at Cabelas???

the side imaging transducer can be mounted on the trolling motor. mine is and works great.

Is there a way I can get the down scan and side scan to both units from one transducer???

I honestly don't know... my units are linked together to share my waypoints. but since both my units are the same I have the same transducer one on my transom the other on my trolling motor.

Yes, you can. The LSS box has the Ethernet ports to support more than one unit.

The HDS-7 Gen 2 is just a regular 2D sonar unit like your HDS-5. Either or both HAVE to have the LSS accessory to give you Structure Scan and Down Scan.

If you buy the package deal HDS-7 that includes the LSS-2 accessory, you just need a additional Ethernet cable to connect the HDS-5 to have Structure Scan and Down Scan on both units.

Ok thank you, its just a matter of where you want to put the transducer??   Which since I have one it only makes sense to put it on the back of the boat and not on the trolling motor...

Do you always know the direction your trolling motor is pointing? It's a lot easier to know where the boat is pointed vs trollng motor, ie transom mount the side scan, it's more stable and safer for the expensive TD.

When you network the TD's just remember the data is behind the boat real time, when you have a transom TD.

I have my big screen (HDS-10) on the bow, but I don't have SS or DS.

Put the big screen at the dash to help with your side scanning and searching. You can have them both run the same Side Scan transducer off the LSS box. However, Lowrance uses two transducers then, you have the one just for Side Scan and Down Scan, and another one for 2d sonar like your 5 has. I recommend mounting the new transducer to your TM and use that transducer for the 5 and the one on the back for the 7 at the dash. Then have them share the Side Scan/Down Scan transducer with the Ethernet connection.
