Weld's Largemouth Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 What is that one small creek, pond, drainage pool or others, that has surprisingly produced bass? On the outskirts of this large lake there are small drainage rivers coming out of the lake. I once fished these shallow bodies of water and they produced lunkers! Biggest was 22 in long and 6 lbs heavy. Share yours! Also, i saw this video of a guy fishing a small stream to only find a big fish! Its pretty cool, watch: 1 Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Below a lake in a creek that was not ten feet wide and five feet deep. Was catching bluegill on grubs. Landed a six pounder. 1 Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Below a lake in a creek that was not ten feet wide and five feet deep. Was catching bluegill on grubs. Landed a six pounder. My lake feeds a stream via it's water level control structure. The wash pipe has carved a pretty nice hole at the head of the stream, it can't be more than 15 feet across and four feet deep. That spot is full of huge bluegill and fat bass gorging themselves on bugs and minnows. There are tons of turtles and snakes. It is where I take my kids so they will catch the 'fishing fever'. We can pull sunnies out of that hole all day long on just a tiny little grub on a jighead. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 Several that I can remember...........I once caught bass and tilapia on regular basis out of a roadside ditch in Florida. And when I was a kid, the creek that drains the local lake runs under the main street before and buildings, before it goes under ground it pools up under a laundromat building on main street, the building is on stilts/poles, and the pond/pool is under the building. I used to catch, largemouth, bluegills, and rock bass out of that pool while my mom was up stairs in the building doing the laundry. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 A small small pond that got water from a pond that is now drained has produced several 4+ fish, the biggest that I have got out of there was around 3lbs. My friend landed his PB there at 6lbs 1oz (I took the photo) 2 Quote
Super User geo g Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 I have been fishing an old super fund dump sight that was one of the worst in the country. It has been closed for twenty years and is now a county park, with two nice size lakes, loaded with some quality big bass. You don't have to worry about people keeping the fish, if they have half a brain. The ones that don't obey the warning start glowing in the dark! Quote

plumworm Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I was fishing Sam Rayburn in Texas a few years ago, and was sitting in the boat waiting for my buddy to get the truck. I had a rod rigged with a senko that had a minor backlash so I picked it out and threw it out onto a 50 ft. wide cement boat landing in about 3 ft. of water. Started to reel it in and had a 4+lb. LM on the other end. Funny thing was that 2 minutes before, a boat was launched and the motor was roaring. Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 The Aquarium of Americas in New Orleans, La. On a more serious note, there is a 9 acre pond about 20 minutes from my house that allows electric only powered boats or kayaks/canoes to fish. I caught my PB (almost 7 lb largemouth) out of this little pond. It also produces at least one nice fish per trip! Quote
swagkid300 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 behind my dad's friends farm was a little pond, it was around 10'x10' and the pond connected to a little creek. I caught many bass there, waiting for bass season to start so i can go back there and catch me sum dinner! Yum!! Quote
SpencerLittle Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I've seen videos of folks dropping baits down storm drains and catching bass and catfish both. Quote
starcraft1 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 A dug out?, I guess you'd call it that?, on the side of Hwy 99 in downtown Chico, Ca. They pulled gravel out of it back in the 60's for the highway. I guess someone stocked it? Quote
VAHunter Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 As a kid growing up in Indiana my friend and I found the smallest pond we had ever seen. It was only 25 ft. by 10-12 ft., but it had about 6 ft. of water. It was completely surrounded by cattails, but we cleared an area big enough to stand at the water's edge. We caught many bass up to six pounds out of that hole. Well, I guess it could have been the exact same bass each time. We always released them. It also held very nice crappie. We may have been known to keep a few of those. While not really a strange place, my buddy and I found an interesting way to fish a creek in Adak, AK back in 90' when we were stationed there. The creek emptied into a saltwater lagoon from under the road. However, you could not see it at all on the other side. We decided to check for it one day. My buddy was the first to find it when he fell through the tundra. We ended up finding a half dozen places where we could pull back the tundra to access the creek. We would drop lures and live bait through the hole and let them drift down the creek. We caught a bunch of nice dolly varden with that method. We would "recover" the creek after each time we fished it. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 I fished a puddle that was left on the trail after the heavy rains when the river went back to its normal level. While walking around it my worm hit the puddle and I had a hit. I caught a small baby catfish which I returned to the river. The catfish hit the lotto of life when he bit my line. The puddle was 3' long x 2' wide and 3" deep if that. There wasn't anymore fish in it. This little catfish wasn't enough for bite of a hush puppy. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted March 31, 2014 Super User Posted March 31, 2014 I have the worst place ever that I unfortunately love. It's a snaking river under a dam that empties into a huge flat water section above the next dam- it's down a steep embankment behind a ghetto housing project so it's FILTHY and actually pretty scary. Washing machines, trash and all kinds of garbage everywhere... Awesome fishing though somehow. Not a lot of people are willing to go down there and the people who do generally have no idea what they're doing. I've literally caught fish off of shopping carts, spare tires, cogs that broke off of the old water wheels in the old dam etc. etc. etc. It always blows my mind how disgusting people really are, and how little the fish seem to care. TC235 <*))))>< Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Nothing too crazy but, theres this small pond near my house that is probably only 3-4 acres big and has produced multiple 4-5s and a 6-12lb lunker. I've caught and released the 6lb three times and hooked a fourth! Shes one mean fish and not shy as I've seen her multiple times chasing lures. Phooey to those who say C@R don't work. As for the pond it's a giant muck hole that gets atleast 20ft+. It's literally a hole with no structure and just lilypads on the edges around the whole thing. Quote
JaxBasser Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Here in florida anything that has had standing water for more than a year or two seems to have bass in it. I've caught bass out of ditches, tiny creeks, and disgustingly dirty retention ponds. One of my best spots was a 2 acre lowland that had about 2 feet of water in the deepest spots, most is around 6-8 inches. Before it dried up in a drought 3 years ago I could wade it and catch 50+ fish there a day, some over 5lbs. It also had some monster bowfin in it. Quote

It is behind my buddies house and we hadn't had any luck on the main lake and he looked at me with shame in his eyes and said "Well, don't look down on me but sometimes when I can't catch anything I go to this little pond I know", I told him...."Are you kidding me, if we can catch fish lets go" it was great! 1 Quote
