Tiller Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I fish very clear water and usually stick with fluoro and copolymer for most techniques but I'm thinking of putting braid on a rod to use for swim jigs and spinnerbaits. Do you think braid is a deterant with moving baits in clear water? Joe Quote
masterbass Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I have braid on most of my reels, but I also use leaders. Quote
jhoffman Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 braids best use is strength to diameter ratio. 10lb braid is way smaller than 10lb mono. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I see your favorite lake is Little Boy lake, I have fished that one a few times(if it is the same lake "attached to Wabedo"), so in the case of that specific lake i would run no less than 30 lb braid and probabily 40 lb to reduce any digging in, and then get a spool of 30 lb trilen vanish, tie about 3 ft on with a double uni knot and for spinnerbaits use a snap, but with swimjigs tie direct. That lake is full of pike and some muskie, braid alone will cause you to loose some nice lures throughout a day... is it May 10th yet??? Mitch Quote
Tony L. Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I dont see why you shouldn't be able to use braid, just use a longer leader. In really clear water, I've heard of people using a section of flourocarbon thats up to 8 feet long to bridge the gap between the end of their main line and the lure tie on. Quote

Mitch Yep, that's the lake, been fishing it my whole life and have definitely donated my share of baits to pike. Not sure I've lost a spinnerbait but lots of jigs and frogs. May 10th? You might be ice fishing still. Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 I use braid all the time in clear water. BUT, except for topwaters, I don't often tie direct to it, even with reaction baits. I don't know if it gets me more bites when I use a fluoro. leader, but it dosen't hurt either, and I have the advantage of better abbrasion resistance. Quote
TTS Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 The lakes I fish 90% time have a visibility of about 5'. HEAVY weeds. All my rods have braid on them. I tie direct for frogs and punching. Fluoro leader on everything else. Have gone leaderless in a pinch and still caught fish. But think a leader MIGHT make a difference. Tom Quote
doyle8218 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I don't think fish care what the line is in any clarity water. 2 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 I always tie braided line directly to my lure, even in gin clear water (crazy ole fool) If you suspect that micro-thin braid is destroying your bass-catching experience, leave the braid alone, but remove the weedguard, rattlebox and all the hooks....that should get you back in the game Roger 1 Quote
aceman387 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I agree. I fish gin clear strip pits and i use 10# power pro braided line in the moss green color without a leader for slow moving techniques like jigs and weightless plastics and drop shotting and i still catch fish regularly. 2 Quote

Exactly Any bass that's threatened by a thin filament in the water is exhibiting poor survival skills. We had a little pond in Georgia that I stocked with wild bass we caught. Occasionally I'd buy a bag of minnows just to have some fun. I'd set the minnow bag on the edge of the pond, and those bass would crash the bag before I got a chance to open it. One bass actually drew blood from my hand (bass are not scaredy cats) Roger Quote
