What's everyone's take on chatterbaits? I have (2) and used them a bit last year but it never really produced for me.

What colors do you like? What conditions work best? Or do you use the standard skirt and trailer or a shad type trailer?

Thanks!!

I like chatterbaits a lot. My best color is the chartreuse in 1/2oz. Caught some big large and small mouth on those things.

and oh yea, I typically use the skirt and twin tail trailer, haven't had any luck with any other trailer. steady retrieve, jumping it, any retrieve will work in the right moment.

Thanks for the reply! What conditions you normally use it?

I use it anytime, sun, rain, wind, dark water, clear water. Very versatile baits. If your looking to buy, search for the kit, as it's a much better deal than buying 1 or 2 at retail. I think cabelas or basspro puts them on sale for 9.99, and it has a bunch of heads, skirts and trailers.

Chatterbaits are killer, especially in muddy water, or when it's a low light time of day. I never use the stock trailer, and always replace it with a Baby Craw. My favorite, and most productive color, is black and blue. Caught some seriously nice fish on this setup, including my second biggest bass to date.

I like them in stained water, in windy conditions, and low light periods. I also like 1/2 oz in chartreuse, chart/white, and bluegill. I caught several very nice fish this past spring pre-spawn when fish were staging to spawn, and this summer on steep rock drops into the old river channels. Speed of retrieve is up to you and the fish; stop and go, slow, fast, or a combination of these chatterbaits have become my favorite "moving" bait.

To be honest, I like chatter baits better for catching northerns (that what I catch when throwing them more often than not). I have caught some good bass on them though.

I hunt those as well but the slime darts can be annoying. :)

Chatter.

White ones.

White ones with the large red eyes are excellent.

Chatter as much as you can.  :)

3/8oz chatterbait with a secret weapon lures bluegill skirt, and the twin tails off a brown or blue yamamoto hula grub =DEADLY for big pond bass.

I also like to trim a black skirt down and use a zoom chunk in black/blue, its a great way to cover water/catch numbers.

The conditions that I use them in:

Choppy water on wind blown banks, dirty/dingy water, and low light conditions

Techniques:

Slow and steady retrieve, burning it, jigging it, erratic retrieve

Colors:

Extreme Blue Gill, Chigger Craw, Black and Blue, Grey and Blue, Shad, OC Shadadelic

Brand:

KaRu Vibrashock (Very High Quality)

I have had my best luck during the three stages of spawn in dingy water.  I don't do so well during the summer time and during the fall.

It's just another moving bait I throw in the muddy, low light conditions when they don't want a spinnerbait or hornet spinner head.

throw a swim bait on it, live magic shad, or money minnow you'll love the results

This was my primary interest. Again thanks for the tips and the vid.

After looking around seems like you can't get the Karu chatterbait anymore? Bummer, looked pretty sweet.

the Karu is not available anymore, thanks to chatterbait suing them. heres a great deal on the chatter kit, you get 2 kits with this one. keep one and sell the other.

Love the chatter.. good bait at dusk. I pretty much only use white/shad color and like to use a shortened fluke as a trailer. But the trailer it comes with is actually a very good trailer.

I use it as an alternative to a spinnerbait.  Just like spinnerbaits, I like the more life like colors in clearer water.

If you say so....

I know he has removed those and the Vibraspins from his website because of the lawsuit, but contact karl and see if he has any "left over". He might be able to find one or two for you :)

I did contact Karl and he was very helpful. :(

I will be doing some chattering as soon the lures stop bouncing off the water.  :)

Glad to hear it.  Be prepared, the bites can sometimes be pretty violent :)
