So I'm going to throw jigs for the first time this season...or try any way lol...My question...I got a ton..is...Im at bps last night and I'm trying to size trailers, specifically Paca Craws to 1/2oz jigs and to me who knows nothing about jigs, look Way to big. Am I wrong. I ended up getting the tiny an baby paca Craws. Any way in the future. how do I know what size trailer I need cause I usually shop online which if was the cause last night I think I would of ended up with trailers that were way to big.

The Rage chunk is a perfect trailer for any jig in the 5/16 and up area.

Always go for a trailer that looks a little too big. It will work well on bigger jigs, and you can always trim the back end down. Instead of getting 2 packs you can get one pack of higher quality ones. Good luck with your jig fishing.

I use Rage Craws, and for jig trailers I bite the last two sections off...... I do this one because it makes a perfect jig trailer and two so I don't have to buy craws and chunks.

I also use Zoom Super Chunks.

I cant remember if the Paca Craws have a solid or hollow body.... if they are solid just get the full size one and bite it down to size.... If they are hollow, then you pretty much will have to buy the paca chunks

the above link is a thread where I posted a few pics of trailers on jigs, so it should give you a point of reference.

also, there is a "pinned" thread on the top of this forum section call "jig fishing questions".... it is 15 pages long, great info there and also has some pictues scattered about of some different trailers.

Full paca's have the hollow body. Great bait but not so much for a jig trailer. I usually want a craw 3.5-4". You can always bite a bit off if they are short striking, but most times I leave them full length.

Baby pacas or paca chunks on jigs.

Rage tails, pit bosses, zoom speed craws or chunks are a good starting point for trailers.

I use Rage Tail Lobster or a 6" Gene Larew Hawg Craw on 3/8 - 1/2 oz jigs. Some times I'll cut down the tail by 1/2-1 1/2".

I like large trailers because I want bulk when targeting big bass.

I'm also in the bigger is better crowd, and usually run a Rage Craw or Lobster on my jigs. I'll bite off one section on the Lobster, unless I'm fishing at night, or real muddy water, then the whole thing gets put on.

If your bass are Smallmouths in deeper clear rocky structure the 2 1/2" to 3" craw trailers are a good choice.

The larger craws with big flapping appendages tend to get largemouth bass attention, however they will eat the more compact jigs with smaller trailer when a faster falling jig is what they want.

It's good to have a variety of trailer sizes, shapes and colors.

Good luck.

I have always had luck with rage craws as trailers. I always be sure to have a to match up with all my jigs. To size up with the jig I normally just bite or cut it shorter. I have also used some zoom trailers that worked well also.

Rage craw or paca chunks are what I use primarily.

Wow guys thank you for all the input..I love this place...

Brian Needam, the pinned thread was the fist thing I did but didnt find my answer but seeing as it is 15 pages deep I probably just missed it...

So the link you posted with the pictures....in all the pictures the trailers appendages start right where the skirt ends, is this basically how it should look cause that is how I imagined it should be. This is what prompted the question cause most of the trailers I grabbed, which I chose from ones I see guys talk about here did not match up like the pictures you posted. The appendages started easily 1 inch after the skirt which did not look right, but hey what do I know.

Last season was my first season with bait casters I'm sure you can throw a jig on spinning gear but most of the stuff I read guys are throwing jigs on pretty stout casting gear which is what I see everyone catching the 10+ slobs on...haha, in the end, is what we're all after...right.

Thanks again guys...I can't tell ya how many time I tell all the guys I fish with..."you gotta check out the site Bass Resource"...

check page 14........ we talk about it some there, whether to be long or short.

I like mine "short", not that it is really short.... as long as the claws are not impeded or buried in the skirt its all good..... A lot of guys trim their shirt which will make it look longer, but I don't trim mine.

but I do bite the back two sections of a rage craw off

some guys will let it hang almost 2 inches below the skirt...... neither is wrong.

it is a personal preference, and confidence thing too.

good luck progressing your jig fishing! We are here to help so fire the questions away.

Strike King Rage Lobster (black/blue flake)  <>  All-Terrain 1/2 oz Grassmaster Jig (extremely weedless)

My wife usually outfishes me using the now discontinued 'Deps Twin-Tail Grub' (Large heavy chunk of plastic with big vibes)

I've used everything from pork frogs to grubs to hornytoads -  put on something and see if the fish have anything to say - craws are very good on jigs but there is a whole world of stuff you can use - sometimes to your advantage.

For finesse fishing I'll typically use a Db craw, or baby rage craw.  Standard jig fishing will be a db craw or rage craw.  I also take off 1-2 sections off the back of the craw.

Of special note:

Traditional jigs: Rage Tail Baby Craw, Craw & Lobster

Swim jigs:  Rage Tail Menace & Shellcracker

The rage and paca chunks are about all I use, and I match the color of the trailer to the jig. Smaller finesse jigs you can use a 3" double tail grub, a baby paca chunk, baby rage craw, or yum craw papi.
