BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted March 26, 2014 BassResource.com Administrator Posted March 26, 2014 Most of us recognize that the 'Nigerian prince' who routinely emails us all and offers untold riches in exchange for our help is a fraud. So is the 'hot' Russian woman who will be your sex slave in exchange for her hand in marriage. Admittedly, the latter is a real bummer. Well, it turns out that hockey fans in Boise, Idaho have ALSO been getting scammed. See, if you go to the Century Link Arena there to see the Steelheads hockey team, you can buy a $4 'small' beer or a $7 'large' beer. Turns out that the small and large beers are the exact same amount of beer. Now a group of fans are suing. We've all gotten duped, tricked, hoodwinked, bamboozled, flim- flamed and straight- up conned. Today we wanted to know: WHEN DID SOMEONE TRY TO PULL THE WOOL OVER YOUR EYES? Quote
macmichael Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 We were out of town in Dallas when I had front end problems. I took my truck to a suggested front end specialist. He told me there were 2 kinds of front ends on my vehicle. Of course my was the one that cost the most money to fix. He must have thought I had sucker written on my forehead because of my out of state plates. We got into a big argument and I left him with something on his head, a large red mark. Quote

We usually use one mechanic for most things because he is reasonable and honest. Last year though, we didn't have time to drive 50 miles out of our way for a simple inspection, so we took the car to one of the local schmucks. Tried to charge the girlfriend $800 to fix some unnamed exhaust problem. . . needless to say she left without getting the "repairs" done. The car went to our regular mechanic a week later and passed with no problems. . . go figure. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 26, 2014 Super User Posted March 26, 2014 First time in Vegas. Got a cab at the airport to take us to the hotel on the strip. He asked if it was our first time in Vegas and I said yes. We took the scenic route to the strip which cost me $30. I think it cost me $7 for the cab ride back to the airport. Lesson learned Quote
Super User Scott F Posted March 26, 2014 Super User Posted March 26, 2014 My wife was looking for work and got a job offer online to work from home. Right away we suspected a scam as almost all work from home jobs online are scams. This one seemed different. They wanted to see what kind of work she could do and for 2 weeks while on probation, they kept giving her projects to work on so they could judge the quality of her work. After 2 weeks, they were going to set up her home office and were going to send her a check to pay for equipment and supplies. Most of the scam work at home jobs want the employee to come up with some money, but they never did. We were skeptical all along but at the same time hoping it was real. The check showed up and her contact wanted her to cash it immediately. The check was from a different state and had the name of a different company than what it should have been plus, the account number and the check routing number were not in the correct places on the check so we knew it was no good. We were careful not to give the new "company" any personal information to protect ourselves so we wouldn't be in any danger of getting ripped off, and we did not try to deposit or cash the check. We did take it to the police but because we did not cash the check, no crime happened so they were not interested in doing anything about the guy who was trying to scam us. Quote

Super User Lund Explorer Posted March 26, 2014 Super User Posted March 26, 2014 My Air Force recruiter told me that the skills they would teach me would help in my civilian life. I still haven't found any civilians with their own ICBM's! 3 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 26, 2014 Super User Posted March 26, 2014 Few years back I took my car in for an inspection. They told me that the 3rd taillight, the one in the back window, was burned out. I thought, so what, and I told them to replace it. When I picked up the car, the 3rd tail light didn't work, and I said something. The service counter said sometimes they get bad bulbs and they put a 2nd bulb in for no charge. That bulb didn't work either. They pulled my car into the shop and looked at it. They told me I had a short somewhere in the electrical system that might start a fire, and that it would cost $700 to $800 to find and fix it. I ask them if the car would pass inspection without the 3rd light, and they said it would, so I got my paper and went home. After dinner I was looking at the car and I noticed that the bulb was very hard to turn and it didn't want to come out of the socket. Well I got it out and noticed that the socket wasn't round anymore, it was bent. I got a pair of pliers, and reshaped it, put the bulb back in, and the light worked just fine. Last time I ever went to that place. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted March 27, 2014 Super User Posted March 27, 2014 I had a bow hunter tell us during supper that he made a 100yard head shot on a deer. When the Hunter left my cousin told me, a 100 yard head shot on a deer robin hood couldn't do that. We had some good laughs on that one during that bear hunting trip. Quote
RAMBLER Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Driving across country, stopped for gas and went into the station to use the bathroom. When I came back out an attendant showed me some oil, under the front of the car, right next to a tire. He tried the old scam of a leaking shock. He tried to convince me that I was endangering the lives of my family by not getting it fixed. I was tired and had a long way to drive and I didn't even discuss it with him, just left and went on my way. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 On my way to my wedding (1979) my best man & I went to fill up my car with gas. I think it was 1/4 full and was maybe $35 to fill. Heck gas was only about .75 /gal back then and only a12gal tank. Upon arriving at church the pastor had failed to show and we had to call to get him to come over. I'm thinking that someone was trying to give me a hint about getting married? Quote

aquaholic Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Oh lord i once had a guy try to get me to hand over a signed title of a mustang i was selling. He told me his company was giving out bonuses but they had to have a receipt for the purchase so they could get the money. He wanted me to sign a copy of a title without any money changing hands and write him a reciept so that "his company would give him the bonus". Worst part was he told me where he lived and it was only about a mile away (wasn't a lie either because i saw his car there all the time). I told him to get the hell off my property. Quote
scrutch Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Last year we had a local company come and clean out our air ducts in our house. As far as we know it had never been done at this house so we thought it was a good idea. Part of the process was a "full furnace inspection". I should have seen this coming. They came to clean while I was at work on a weekday. At about 11:00am my wife called me in a panic that our house was filling up with carbon monoxide and we needed over $1000 in furnace repairs to fix the problem. I said "whoa, whoa, wait just a minute. Don't do anything, I'll be right home!" (I work at a utility company that also employs natural gas technicians and furnace repair men) I had a buddy who was a furnace repair man come with me and I was home in ten minutes. I immediately asked the OWNER of the business to show me the problem. He showed me two "major problems" with my furnace. He said the parts would be $400 and $600 labor to install them. After his speech I laughed at him and told him that the pipe he said was leaking was actually a double walled "y" pipe and NO carbon monoxide was leaking. (My buddy showed him the readings on his air sniffer gauge he uses to test for this type thing). I also told him that I could get the parts from the local HVAC supply shop FOR ABOUT $60 and do it myself! I told him to get his crew and tools and get out of my house! A few weeks later my mother in law's garage caught fire and she had smoke damage throughout her house. The restoration company representative (my mother in law's cousin) was telling me what needed done and that the ducts needed cleaning. I told him my story of the attempted scam and he said he would never use that company again! That cost that crook about $50,000 per year in lost business! What goes around, comes around! Quote
