So I am ditching the plastic star and I am going to order a core 51 drag star for my curado 51... I wonder if I need the drag click plate as well?

I know someone has done this.. I think... Well can a supertuner lend a helping hand?

You need everything from the nut out.

Thanks J Francho !

I appreciate that much...

This is what a 50E looks like with a 200E drag star and Scorpion XT1000 knob caps. I think the Core50 drag star is a different shape and the Core100 looks more like the 200E.

So that looks good.. And it's a alloy star? So I could order a drag star from a 201e ? What else would I need for that.. I like the caps too!!

Yeah the 201E will be aluminum. I ordered the drag star, the click pin, click pin spring and the retainer spring that holds the click plate on. J Franco is right, just order everything above the nut. I ordered everything starting with the Roller Clutch Innertube....BNT 3909..... but I do not think that I needed to order everything that I ordered.

The knob caps are an item that Japan Tackle ordered for me from Shimano Japan. I bought them when I bought a reel and they shipped everything together. You can go to PLAT, create an account if you haven't already done so, and look at their Shimano parts schematics for Shimano baitcasters and order the Scorpion XT1000 knob caps from them.

The Curado E series was a GREAT reel. I can't believe it was a plastic drag star. Who would have thunk it.

The Shimano fanboys cry about Daiwa using plastic drag stars.

Really, who abuses their reels so much that they are going to break a drag star???????

I didn't say a word about it breaking.... I like alloy better... I will pay to have it .. It's what I want... As far as diawa... Seems a lot of company's use some form of polymer technology or carbon in different ways.... Before long I will order a couple carbon fiber handles....but I have not ever trashed a diawa reel or owner.... And I am a shimano fanboy. Peace

& out......

This is incorrect, the Curado E had a forged aluminum drag star.

If I were you, I would get an Avail dragstar, its aluminum and it comes with everything you need and is a perfect fit, no modifications or extra parts needed. Also, its tapered so you can fit a swept handle in the future if you want. You have color options too.

That spool knob needs gold anodizing. :)

The Avail drag star is also $50.00 plus $9.00 shipping. You will probably have $30.00 total in your genuine Shimano drag star but, if you want a swept carbon fiber or aluminum handle later on, the Avail product is the way to go.

I am usually the one learning different things around here. It what this Forum is all about. Since you in the upgrade mode, another very inexpensive upgrade that you could do is to replace the bushing in each knob with a bearing. Look at the 51E Schematic on Shimano's website or your owners manual and you will see that right now, you have 1 bearing and 1 bushing in each knob.

I thought he was referring to the 200E

I should have known that you knew that! I wonder what Shimano was thinking putting the graphite drag star, a bushing in each knob and a plastic clutch bar on the E Model Curado. I would have gladly paid $200.00 for the 50E with those upgrades.

I broke one on my Citica, it's the same material they use on the new Chronarch Es and Curado 50E. Maybe I dropped the reel on one of the arms and that's why it broke off pretty easily when I was tighten the drag.

I doubt it'll break with normal use, I personally don't like it because it flexes when adjusting.

The OP said it was plastic, just going off what he said.

Stock Drag star on the curado 50/51 e and the not too much later chronarch 50/51 e were of a

Graphite material? I used the term plastic loosely.

My curado 51e's drag star is very flexible and as such, very annoying . On my chronarch 50e...the graphite drag star is rock solid... Go figure... I assume it was a shimano change in material? However I do not know.....

I know this.... The cu51 is going to get a alloy star

And a hawgtech handle...(long) with 4 ssbb..

Also those pics are all really nice I appreciate everyone's assistance on this issue!

Yeah, they were made of an graphite material, but I say plastic anyways. Interesting you say the Chronarch has a rock solid drag star, I'll be okay with that along as the annoying flexing isn't there. I only have Curados because I love the colour and comes with already aluminum star on the 200s.

Shimano changes stuff up all the time so there is no surprise if they improved on this to make it stronger, I'm not the only person who has broken off an arm. The new black septon knobs are a big improvement over the grey ones. The grey ones would get sticky and weren't made very well, some would have a bubble in the knob. The first thing I noticed about the new black septon knobs are they are much harder and durable. No issues at all after swapping all my old ones.
