Bass NC Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Hey folks, I am very curious about everyone's favorite square bill crank, lipless crank, jerkbait, and top water hardbaits. I know different situation call for different lures but what are your all time favorites? Brand, color, size? 1 Quote

fishva Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Square bill: I have this Yamamoto crank I picked up a couple years ago that I just love. It's weird, because I've bought others that *should* be exactly the same, and they don't produce. But this one does. I'd go swimming to get it back if it got hung up. Lipless: Red eye shad Top water: Not my specialty, but I usually start by throwing the good old jitterbug. Maybe because it was one of the only hardbaits I had as a kid, and using it makes me relaxed & brings back good memories. Quote

Hogsticker Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Rapala flat rap and Shad rap. Both awesome cold water baits and the only time I throw cranks. Spro Aruku shad and Yo Zuri rattlin vibe are my best lipless cranks. Lucky Craft pointer 78s are my favorite jerks, but I have two of the old school Shimano boxes full of jerkbaits for different conditions. Quote

senko_77 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Square bill: Diawa Peanut II (laugh all you want, lol) Freakin fish catching machine. Lipless Crank: Spro Aruku Shad, Yo-Zuri Rattl N Vibe, and Bill Lewis Pro Trap Jerkbait: Norman Razor Minnow, weighted to suspend (fav. cold water bait), and the original Rapala minnow #9 or #11 Topwater: Berkley Frenzy Popper....to think, they used to be 99. in the bargain bin. Now they are $20+ on ebay : ( ONE THING TO NOTE from the replies above....anyone see a pattern? A ton of anglers are throwing the KVD square bills and and Red Eye Shads....not saying they don't work but it says something when you see over 50% of people suggesting it. It means when you hit the water, a bunch of fish have already seen heard a KVD square or Red Eye that day or days prior during practice. Try doing something different like gluing the rattles in your Red Eye or throwing a slightly larger or smaller version of the KVD square. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that both of those baits are great, but in a tournament situation, I bet a ton of fish are gonna be seeing them. Try being a bit different. 3 Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted March 29, 2014 Super User Posted March 29, 2014 Don't have a favorite. Have different baits for different situations. KVD, Sixth Sense, Lucky Craft, Norman, Megabass, Jackal. They all have different uses in different conditions, as far as squarebills. There isn't one that does it all for me. Lucky Craft, for instance, the old RC baits yaw too wide to fish timber effectively. They're super in grass and rock. The Xcalibur baits are super in wood, as are Bagley, but aren't my favorite in grass because they nose down too much. The Arashi is one of my favorite baits, as is the Knuckle, for a large variety of cover, but I don't particularly like it in rock. Jerkbaits- the same way. It's all based on temp, depth, water clarity, and mood of the fish; as well as cover type. The easy one, though, is top waters. I'll take a popMax and a Rover over nearly anything. That said, there are times I like a clear spook or a Sammy. Cranks- same as above all over again. Quote
McAlpine Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Squarebill: KVD 1.5 and Xcalibur 100 Lipless: none. Hate them Jerkbait: just don't really have a favorite. Takes a village and all. Topwater: Booyah frog, cavitron buzzbait. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 30, 2014 Super User Posted March 30, 2014 Generally if it says Strike King on the package, it's in my boat. I also like Storm, Manns, Bandit, and.......................yes Rapala stuff. I was mad at them for a while, but dang it, there junk catches fish, so I had to get over it. 3 Quote
