RF813 Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Looking for a 5' (or so) spinning rod for my Son. He's 7, and says the longer rods feel a bit heavy (awkward) for him. I was wondering what direction you guys would lean in. I can always put his new reel on the old ugly stik rod he was using last year (which is 6'). I'd really like him to start casting himself and being comfortable with it, and the longer rods just aren't comfortable for him. He's tall, but hasn't been fishing very long. I just want to get him something that will work well and will help promote the sport, and not frustrate him. I also want it to be able to handle a small bass (1.5-3lbs) in the off chance he hooks up with one, which is what we primarily fish for. thanks Rich Quote

Not selling, but I have an previous-gen Shimano Compre at 5'9" and it is a fantastic rod, MXF, has handled many 6# bass. Here's a Bass Pro spinning rod search for 5' rods. You'll have to look at each to find the length you want. http://www.basspro.com/Fishing-Fishing-Rods-Spinning-Rods/Length-5-/_/N-1z0uxb1Z1z0x7t7 Several are quite good for beginners. Microlites, Berkley rods, etc. I'd suggest you look for a Medium powered rod, which will likely put you in the 6' range as most shorter than that are UL. Unless you have $$ to spend. Quote
RF813 Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Yup, that's exactly why I was asking. Budget for this? I'd have to look a bit deeper to see what's reasonable. It's been a long winter and a lot has been spent already to satisfy the urge to fish. 6' maybe be ok. I'm going to try the older rod with him which is 6' and pour through that list you suggested. I didn't look at BP since there isn't one near me and I prefer to buy rods in person. (bad luck buying online). BUt i'll be near one in a couple weeks, so now is the time to do the research. Thank you. Quote
RF813 Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Yea, after looking through all of these I feel like the 6' option is really the best way to go. I'll try the old ugly stik we have and see how that works for him this spring. Quote

As well, sensitivity will increase the lighter/better blank you can go to. The Graphite Series is going to be a lot more sensitive for him. Plus they offer a 5'6" Medium powered, and they're on sale for $30... http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Graphite-Series-Spinning-Rods/product/1204170505228/ Quote
RF813 Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Very very true. And that price is right in my wheelhouse. Quote
