guisingerevan Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I'm looking for a squarebill/jerkbait rod and I've asked a few time but have only gotten brands and I was just wondering what you guys would recommend length and taper? I was thinking about 7'0" moderate fast, medium power? Thanks Quote
Stingray23 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I like a shorter rod for jerkbaits and a slightly longer rod for square bills and lipless cranks. If I had to get one rod to cover both, I'd go with a 7' MH-moderate rod. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 23, 2014 Super User Posted March 23, 2014 My dedicated jerkbait rod is an Avid AVC66MF with a soft tip. Quote

Hogsticker Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Ideal length to cover both with one stick for me would be 6'9. Kistler has a 6'9 Klx crank rip twitch rod that I use. Works great Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 24, 2014 Super User Posted March 24, 2014 Talking square bills…I like a moderate rod for rocks, docks, and wood. For weeds, I like a fast rod. Same goes for traps. For jerk baits, I use a shorter rod, with a short rear grip. Medium power, x-fast taper gives me the control I want. I use the same rod for spook type baits as well. Also makes a great sniper style spinnerbait stick. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 24, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Personally, what I'm looking for in a cranking rod versus what I'm looking for in a jerkbait rod are two very different things. If I was going to try to use one for both the rod you described would probably be about where I'd end up. It will be a better cranking rod than a jerkbait rod but since I fish cranks longer than I do jerks it would make sense to get one that leans more their direction. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 24, 2014 Super User Posted March 24, 2014 I do not like the same rod (in general) for both. I prefer something less than 7' with a F or XF action for jerkbaits, and a 7' Mod. action for squarebills. The only exception is if the grass has gotten thick and grabby, then I will use a F action with the squarebills. Quote
Brian Needham Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I do mine on a Dobyns 704. I think a St Croix Avid that RW said is good too, you could also go 7 foot instead of 6'6 if you wanted. It is preference on length, some like longer some like shorter. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Mojo Bass 7' MH with a moderate action. Great for squarebills, i like a spinning rod for jerbaits, but i guess you could use the same setup. Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Im looking at the veritas med-mod for squarebills and lipless. Now that im seeing a lot of people are using fast action for jerkbaits I will just use my 6'6" mh-f avid. Thanks guys Quote
Brian Needham Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 most guys prefer a really soft tip with a jerkbait. the reason is so when you "jerk" the bait dips, ducks, darts, dives and dodge but does not move forward a bunch. 1 Quote
