coak Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 I'm currently using hybrid to lob 3/4 oz swimbaits. From about 20 yds and in I have confidence in setting the hook. It's the farther out I worry. So do you guys that fish them regularly throw them on braid? What line do you all use? Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted March 22, 2014 Super User Posted March 22, 2014 Most of the guys throwing the larger swimbaits only use #20-25. I'm talking in the 3-6oz range. You'd be fine with #15. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 22, 2014 Super User Posted March 22, 2014 Small swim baits like that, 12# CXX or 50# Power Pro. Quote
coak Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Thanks guys, I'll definitely be looking into picking up some braid! One more ? What type action should an ideal rod be? Currently I'm using a M/MF........wondering if M-MH/F is the way to go? Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 23, 2014 Super User Posted March 23, 2014 I use 17 or 20 pound suffix elite with a fluoro leader. I throw 1 - 4 ounce swimbaits mostly. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted March 23, 2014 Super User Posted March 23, 2014 I like a 7'6" HF rod with 15-17 CXX for throwing those small hollow belly type swimbaits. I like a long, powerful rod for solid hook sets on long casts. I use jig heads and weighted swimbait hooks but both have stout hooks that require some force to drive home. Quote
hatrix Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I like Seaguar Red label in any where from 12-17# depending. I throws hollow belly with 12# and bigger baits like around 3oz with 17#. It's cheap comparatively to others and work like a champ for me. Quote
stkbassn Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I'm planning on trying Sunline mono this year, can't remember which one, the $33 dollar one on TW. Any opinions on this mono? Heard great things. I'm throwing 6-8 baits..1-4 oz.... Quote
Brian Needham Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 3/4oz head with a 5" big hammer on it I throw on 20# tatsu....... I also throw a 5 or 6" bullshad on the same. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted March 26, 2014 BassResource.com Administrator Posted March 26, 2014 40lb Katsu on an Okuma TCS-C-701H rod. I throw small- to medium-sized swimbaits. I'd use an 8' deep sea rod and a small cannon to launch those 8oz swimbaits! LOL Quote
BobP Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 I throw 5" hollow bellies on 3/4 oz Owner Ultra conical saltwater jig heads with 20# Suffix 832 and a 15# fluorocarbon leader on a 7' MH fast action rod. These will cast far beyond 100 ft and you really do need braid to set hook at those distances. Quote
Super User Solution WRB Posted March 26, 2014 Super User Solution Posted March 26, 2014 Sunline Shooter Deifer mono maybe the answer to swimbait anglers. The 22 lb is 0.015 D great strength to diameter ratio, eliminates knot issue we fight with FC line. The one thing you want with swimbaits is ease of casting long distances. Braid creates big problems casting heavier lures long distances do to severe backlash when they occur. FC stretches and breaks, you lose the swimbait and bass. Mono is your best bet and any good casting line should be OK. I use inexpensive Trilene Big Game 25 lb for larger 3-8 oz swimbaits and respool line after every 3rd outing I use it. Swimbaits 1 1/2 oz or less you can use a wider variety of lines without concern, I use 15 mono. If you try to hook set using the rod at distances over 30 yards, you are going to have issues, use the reel, then the rod after the line is tight...sharp hooks work! Tom Quote
Brian Needham Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 I have a question......... why are people telling the OP to throw a 3/4oz swimbait on 25#+ line? I mean a 6xd crank weights more, so I don't get it? now if the OP was asking 3 or 4 oz swimbait I would understand. can someone clarify? 1 Quote

I was wondering the same 25lb is overkill for that weight. 3oz+ baits yup but not 3/4. Quote
