Inglorious Basser Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 So my brother won a Shimano Sedona 2500 spinning reel at a stag and doe draw, he does not fish so gave it to me..... So my question is, looking on line it states the line capacity at 6pounds... 8 pound...etc...etc... But I was going to use for river trout fishing ( very light tackle 1/16th-1/8th ) but I want to put 4 pound mono on it. So can I use 4 pound on this reel? Or do I have to use at least 6 pound as stated on there web site? I personally do not see why I could not use lighter line but just wanted to check to make sure this is not a problem. thanks Quote
The Rooster Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 It's because of the spool size. It's best suited for the size line it states to keep it from digging into itself under pressure and causing bad casting or even break offs. The spool being as wide as it is allows room for smaller lines to squeeze between the wraps and be pinched. On your next cast with the lure sailing through the air, line pays out down to the dug in point.......SNAP! Lure lost. Or when a fish hits and pulls line out down to the dug in pinched point.......SNAP! Fish lost. For smaller line, I'd drop down a size, like maybe the 1000. Quote
cbass12 Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 You'll be fine. I use the same reel with 4 pound line in the trout streams in missouri and have no issues. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted March 22, 2014 Super User Posted March 22, 2014 You can definitely put 4lb line on it. The line capacity suggestions are just for the amount of line you can fit on the reel, nothing else. You can fit a lot more 4lb on than 6 or 8. Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 22, 2014 Super User Posted March 22, 2014 The only problem with spooling 4 lb test on your reel is that it needs a lot of 4 lb to fill it. My sugestion is fill it halfways with 12 lb test, then use teflon tape to cover it and then spool that 4 lb test. 3 Quote

I use 10lb braid (2lb mono dia.) on my spinning gear, and I think it takes like 45,000 yards of it to fill a spool..............backing of any kind is your friend here. Quote
