Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 22, 2014 Super User Posted March 22, 2014 Do you ever look at your key ring and wonder, what does this key go to??? I guess it's maybe because I am a teacher and get keys to different buildings, but I have keys to storage buildings and gates that I have no idea where they go. So, do you ever look at a key and wonder what in the world it goes to? Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted March 22, 2014 BassResource.com Administrator Posted March 22, 2014 Oh heck ya! I have 2 or 3 keys just looking for me to discover what they belong to. Quote

That's my goal. I have a key to my house, car, shop, gate, other house, moms house, moms pastures, middle school, elementary school, gym, football field, gym concession, football concession, elementary gym, church gym, fire station, etc. etc. etc. TOO MANY KEYS!!!! Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 22, 2014 Super User Posted March 22, 2014 House keys, truck keys (ignition and cap), garage key, boat key, two keys for boat trailer to secure the hitch in the receiver, and the lock which prevents the hitch from releasing, the key for the compartments, and a key for the spare tire on the trailer, and finally, the key for the outboard, starting/ignition. That's it, eleven keys. Quote
The Rooster Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 I have 13 keys on my key ring. Many look the same, there are 4 different but similar master lock keys, 3 different but similar trailer lock keys, 4 different but similar house keys, and otherwise I have 2 different vehicle keys. I guess I'm the weird one, I can tell you what each key goes to, right down to the master lock keys, without having any of them labeled. Each master lock key fits multiple locks in different locations also, usually one key per four locks. I can tell just by the teeth patterns which key is which, though some of those are even similar (dad's house key will open my door, but mine won't open his, very minute differences only, but I know which is which). I nearly never miss when reaching for a key for a specific lock. I also have them arranged on their rings in a specific order (3 separate rings, each containing certain keys, all rings connected by a D ring that clips to my belt), with corresponding keys side by side, teeth patterns all the same direction, but at least one key turned backwards from the rest for quickly finding it. I also have a complete set of spare keys in my truck, in case of loss or accidental lock out (with a spare truck key hidden in the frame for accidental lock out of it), and the spare set is arranged identically to the original set. I'm OCD about keys, but it simplifies things for me. Spare keys save my butt at least twice a year or more, I get locked out often. Scatterbrained I guess. I took the time to set up my keys in a way that made sense when I need to find one in a hurry and it works. Having a memory for minute details helps also, I've identified keys by teeth patterns for years. Never look at numbers or labels on them. I really prefer identical keys in shape, sizes and all one color. I can go through them fast by teeth and find the one I need. Easy in the dark too. Do it by feeling. Go ahead and tell me I'm weird now. I'm like that key maker guy in the 2nd Matrix movie. LOL. Quote

I took it off my main key chain saturday night and put it on my spare car key chain, because i was going out to a club and didnt want to carry a "bunch" of keys around all night bulging out my pocket, and forgot to switch my house key back... Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted March 27, 2014 Super User Posted March 27, 2014 Couldn't tell you why but 8 out of 10 of my keys look exactly the same. Fortunately the 2 that I use the most are the 2 that are different. Aside from those, I might use 2 or 3 of the others every once in a while and it's always a pain trying to figure out which is which. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 27, 2014 Super User Posted March 27, 2014 I have 3 keys, one for the Jeep, one for the house and one for the lock to my shed. And for all of you that have a ton of keys it isn't good to have a lot of weight on your iginition system in your vehicle. I know it sounds silly but all that added weight dangling and swing back and forth every day can cause premature wear on certain parts of the ignition cylinder. 1 Quote
quanjig Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Fly, you are 100% correct about the "wads" of keys people have dangle from the ignition of their vehicle. I used to have people bring in ignition keys to be duplicated all the time that were barely recognizable as keys and when you said can't do it, they would often seem very puzzled when I told them why!!
