Levi Sperry Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Background I grew up in Arkansas on the white river and bull shoals lake mostly and always did good bank fishing. Since I've moved here to kc I just can't seem to catch a lick No matter the lake I mostly favor smithville as Jacomo is to busy and Longview is just way to busy. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 21, 2014 Super User Posted March 21, 2014 Welcome aboard, Levi. There are some KC area folks on these boards that might be able to give you some area-specific pointers. Maybe give a little more info, like your setups, whether you're throwing cranks, soft plastics, jigs, etc. Quote
Levi Sperry Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 I use a 6 foot ugly stick and a president 6900 series by Pflueger. I can link both if needed. I've thrown just about everything I can think of really. And just about every bait also. Minnows, worms, plastics, cranks, spinners, crawdads and many more. But I havent done many rigs yet I guess that might be a good place to start. I'm still learning about rigs and tying myself. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 22, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 22, 2014 Best advice I can give for Smithville is to go somewhere else. Last time I fished there was a tournament with 30 anglers, 1 keeper was brought in. I didn't have a bite for 8 hours, neither did my partner or anyone else. There's a KC area thread in the Central forum with tons of information on area lakes, almost 200 pages worth of info. Quote
Levi Sperry Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that lake is a pit lol Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 22, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 22, 2014 There's lots of other lakes in the area that are good. Where in KC are you located and maybe we can point you in the direction of somewhere better? Quote
Levi Sperry Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 I'm open to traveling really anywhere around the area. I live right by arrowhead stadium. Quote
cbass12 Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Try some of the smaller lakes that MO Dept of Conservation manages. There are a lot of little gems around the area if you put in a little time exploring. The MDC has a big atlas with the state broken up into sections and all the lakes listed. 1 Quote
pbrussell Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that lake is a pit lol It's actually called "the gar pit" quite often. Sorry you had to find that out from first hand experience. Quote
Levi Sperry Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 I appreciate the help from all who responded. I actually just moved to Bonner springs and im gonna be trying out the Kansas side of fishing so wish me luck Quote

Unfortunately, none of the lakes or ponds around you are very good. There's some decent bank fishing at Lake Lenexa, can probably catch some right now in fact. Quote
kcdinkerz Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 a buddy of mine fishes longview, mostly shore he does pretty good with just stick worms and spinnerbaits from spring to fall. don't over look longview lake, he cnr's 4-5 pounders every year Quote

Your best bet in Kansas if you have a boat to go down to Perry Lake or get on google maps and look for neighborhood ponds, their are a ton of ponds out in Bonner. Quote
1strikeking Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Lake jacomo is one of my favorite lakes. I if you get out there on a week day there is nobody out there. Smithville lake is a very tough lake to fish you have you really know the lake to do well there. Lake jacomo in the summer time is a grass fisherman dream. You can go down the bank and catch keeper after keeper on a brush hog flipping grass. You are right on some days you cant go down the bank with out passing a few boats, Another option would be to go a little north and fish some of the smaller MDC lakes or city lakes. If you don't mind traveling 2 hours you could go to Mizingo lake witch was ranked 79th on the best bass lakes in America by B.A.S.S. this year. There are some pretty good lakes around kc you just have to fish them to find out if they are good or not. Quote
bethulog Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 If you are willing to make the run 90minutes north, Mozingo lake in Maryville is awesome. The bite can be slow on weekends especially right now since schools out and what not but I pull great fish from there all the time. Quote
