EsoxWI Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Apologize in advance if this question has been asked before. How long can you use fluorocarbon line? Can you "flip" the line like you can braid and get more use out of it? Gene J., in one of his videos mentioned he got bout 2-1/2 years out of it by using KVD line and lure conditioner. Am pondering purchasing some Tatsu and want to see how long of use I can get out of it to help justify the cost. Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 20, 2014 Super User Posted March 20, 2014 Fluorocarbon line is a polymer and all polymers creep and distort under constant pressure. What this means is the outer layers of line on your spool put constant pressure on the underplaying line deforming it. Your best bet is use filler like braid or some other type of line and fill the spool with about 60 yards of FC. Tom Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 use it till it gets low on your spool. line doesnt just instantly deteriorate in a week and spontaneously combust like some people would have you think...im going into my 3rd season with the FC on the one reel i use it on, and its still fine, not a d**n thing wrong with it... 1 Quote
fishthedayaway Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 i couldve gone all year without changing a spool of 15 lb seaguar abrazx had i not gotten a nasty backlash, best line on the market IMO. i bought 4 more spools after that and it should only last longer with the kvd line and lure, im putting that on all my reels this year. also depends on the cover its used for, how often and other things. hope this helped! 1 Quote

But when I examined the line from the bulk spool, it seems to be smooth. Quote
T_Nix35 Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Personally I change my fluorocarbon/monofilament every 3-4 months, and if I was going to fish a tournament and had the $ to do it I would put fresh line on the day before the tournament. I can't stand the memory of old line that has been sitting on my reel for a long period of time. Its a pain in my butt and I don't like dealing with it. Another reason I like to re-spool my reels fairly often, is because fresh line gives me a little bit more confidence (hence why I would do it before tournaments). As far as how long you can leave it on there, I am assuming you can leave it on as long as you want. The line will deteriorate or crack over extensive amounts of time, but its all up to you. I would hate to get out on the water and break off because I didn't change my line. 1 Quote
BobP Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 I usually change mine out in the spring before the season. Sitting on the reel under winding tension all winter develops quite a bit of memory. But if you check it very closely by feel and by sight for abrasions, kinks, nicks, etc and also use line conditioner on it, there's really no reason not to use it until it gets too short on the spool from re-tying lures. You can also stretch it to remove spool memory but stretched monofilament line (including fluoro) does not completely rebound to its original diameter after stretching - it gets a little thinner instead. And the spool memory will come back more quickly than with new line. I immediately change out fluoro if it is ever sharply kinked while removing a backlash. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted March 20, 2014 Super User Posted March 20, 2014 You can use it until it's no good. When you can grab it and break it with your hands, it's time. I always check it a bit before I go out. If memory becomes an issue, use better quality line. It's cheaper to spend $30 on a spool for a year than to spend $10/spool and change it 5-6 times a year. Brian Needham Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I have a set up that has had the same tatsu on it for over a year now. I use backing and put 65 yds of topshot on. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 27, 2014 Super User Posted March 27, 2014 How Long Can You Use Fluorocarbon Line? About 5 minutes, give or take, then I pick up a rod with some real line... Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 27, 2014 Super User Posted March 27, 2014 I refresh my line at the beginning of the year and then use it as long as I can deal with it. Once it gets too much memory I replace again during the season. Quote
Brian Needham Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 What are you backing your Flouro with? generally the cheapest 12# mono I can find I got a 1200 yard spool of 12# BPS brand a long time ago, so I use that. Quote
