I'll start it off.

Curado 200B (bantam). Heavy spool = more momentum. I was casting a 3/8 oz lipless crank, and I about spooled it with 12 lb trilene and a 7' MM rod. I didn't have a full spool of line on - only about 80 yards, but it was down to the last 20 yards or less with every cast. I couldn't even see the splash of the lure from where I was casting.

EDIT:: It was a 5/8 oz lipless crank so it doesn't really count. :laugh5:

Love throwing 1/4oz cranks on my conquest 51 and aldebaran mg. Fresh pair of hedgehog spool bearings and your sending that trap a mile...

Well, most of my experience has been with Shimano reels and a Trap gets launched pretty well with Chronarchs.  That's what I would be throwing a Trap with.  How far?  LOL, not making the mistake of putting a number to it but far, as you already mentioned :)

Any of my reels will throw a 1/4 oz lipless fine but if had to pick the one that would chuck it the farthest I guess it would be my Core 50s.

I think the rod may be at least as equally important for max distance.  I would grab a rod with a Moderate action.  Longer is better.

Line would probably be 6#-8# mono.

Reel?  Don't know.  I get good distance with a variety of reels, buy not the distance many speak of with any of my reels.  Quite sure that is a function of the operator rather than the gear.  :sad-012:

Now if I could just throw as hard as Tom does I might reach some of those long distances without making a long distance call.  :teeth:

I think 3 of the reels I would start with in attempting a record cast with those weights would be my TD-Z 105H, Purple Alphas and Curado 51E.  Possibly a gold Carbonlite.  Probably would start with different reels if you had specified 1/2-5/8 oz.  The line would be heavier, but the rod the same action.

Steez with 1016 spool and boca os 7's can launch one further then I'll ever need.

That's one of those baits that just sail when you throw them.

I know ya'll are gonna think this is a joke or something, but sometimes I tie a trap onto my cheapest rod/reel setup when I don't need a crankbait that day, and that Shimano Caenan will ZING a trap, 7' crankin stick from BPS. Absolutely slings them, and that reel winches in some fish pretty well.

I do think my Curado 50e throws further though, my longest casting setup period is my Curado 200E7 with 7' MH rod, always keep a jig tied on that, 17-20lb fluoro once the Georgia sun decides to get really hot, 65lb braid from late fall to early summer. I like braid in the winter because I find myself throwing into more structure and pulling fish through more crap. If anyone was curious.

The T3-B with hawgtech bearings can send these out there a mile, also the quantum Kinetic pt with the upgraded bearings is a beast, a little touchy to get tuned in, but once it is it is one of my better performing casting reels... I would say with a lipless crank 50+ yards would be a good estimate...

My Calais 201DC on my first gen Cumara Reaction 7'7" M crank rod. Probably spool it with 30# PP.

Zillion with hyper long cast spool and hedgehog air bearings. Full spool if 30 pound braid on a seven foot mod.fast medium rod. I can throw it to where I can barely see the lure hit water.

It probably is the rod and I've heard a moderate action casts further than a faster taper.  Some people feel spinning casts further than b/c, but I have read reports of Avets casting 150 yds, but not on a typical bass rod.  Magging Avets with rare earth magnets is often done for more control, mine is magged.  I look at the reason for distance and when bass fishing I'd prefer to move closer rather than casting further, unless absolutely necessary.  At distance you give the bass more opportunity to get unbuttoned, plus at distance a good hookset doesn't always happen.

1/4oz would likely go on a  spinning outfit if it were me, but a properly setup baitcast reel with properly flushed and lubed bearings will cast Traps well as long as the rod loads sufficiently. The rod is the determining factor.

1/4 oz traps (certain brands at least) cast like bullets. I have never found the need to go to spinning.

Traps, any size that matches with the rod will show you what any reel is capable of.

I can't think of any bait with a profile and weight distribution that launches any better.

I can.............sling jig aka jig fish, speed jig and host of other names.  Metal jigs that are variations of a diamond jig.  I thought a Kastmaster or hopkins casted far, until I started using these.  Excellent for trolling too.

What's the point of casting a vertical jigging spoon? Specifically in a bass fishing setting.

I generally toss lipless cranks on a 7' med-fast (rated at 1/4oz to 3/4oz) with the PQ 5-year Challenge test reel.  Medium, rather than moderate action to be better able to rip out of grass.  Under ideal conditions, I can make 45 yards or so, could maybe touch 50 yards in still air and freshly cleaned bearings.

Since I fish lipless from the bank quite a bit, casting distance can be a factor in getting to where the fish are. So, I started a quest to assemble the ultimate lipless crank combo (mostly for open water - not ripping in grass).  I ended up with:

Calais 200DC on a 7'2" St. Croix XC72MHM (mh-mod)

Antares (latest model) on another XC72MHM

Calcutta 100DC on a 7'6" BPS medium-power Crankin' Stick

Tatula reel on a 7'7" med-reg Tatula rod

(on order) 2014 Conquest 100 on a (already have) Loomis CBR906 7'6" mh-mod

I also have a Crucial CRCC711MA - 7'11" med-mod rod waiting for a reel.

The Calais DC will toss baits a LONG way when you get the cast just right...but you can backlash this sucker. I haven't graduated to the long range setting on it yet.  The Antares is very nice but I wasn't getting the range I wanted with the red/stock brakes so I just installed two of the lighter weight brakes but haven't had it on the water yet.  The Calcutta DC is also a bit touchy on casting technique  and I haven't had it much farther out than my trusty PQ.  The Tatula reel with that Tat rod may be a pretty good combination - great distance, achieved relatively easily.  I'm looking forward to getting the 2014 Conquest and seeing what she will do.  Finally, I put the Tat reel on the 7'11" Crucial for a test run and I'm finding that perhaps my shoulder/elbow issues are going to keep me from getting all the distance out of that rod that It's probably capable of (gone are the days when I could handle my 13' surf rod...).

After playing with all this stuff, what I find is that even if you do get out to 60 or 70 yard distances, you've exceeded your hook-up (and button-up) range and you loose fish out there.  I could try switching to braid, and may try that some day.

I think at the end of the day, regardless of the tackle you use, if you can reach out 40-50 yards, you've probably hit the practical limit for keeping fish on the line...

YMMV

Edit:  Since you were focusing on reels - IPT is a factor as well.  I generally use a 6.4 (26" IPT) but you might consider a faster reel if you plan on running the bait over skinny water and/or ripping it out of grass....

I use a Red Eye Shad on my Shimano Sahara/Shimano Clarus M/XF rod w/8lb P-Line CX Premium copolymer. That thing goes so far I can't hardly see where it lands.
