on sale so I picked some up, ok been baitcasting for 4 years and feel pro status on casting one, but this scatters just aint cutting it. I can get alright on the jerk but the cranks seem impossible to get far without a lash. My skill level down or is anyone else having a time with these

They're light baits.  I cast them on spinning gear, most of the time.  When I am using a crank stick for them, it's a 7-2 Medium Moderate that loads extremely well with 1/4 and 5/16 baits.

I throw the scatter rap crank version with a Daiwa Exceler on a 7'0" W&M S-Glass Crankin Rod M/M with 10# Seaguar Red Label. It isnt a setup to brag about by any means, but it does the job very well. They seem to cast pretty darn far and I don't have to thumb the spool much.

I keep the brakes around 7/8 out of 10. Try playng with the brakes and tension if you have not already. Lighter # test should also cast more smoothly. You could try a spinning setup as well.

been yanking my hair, the scatter jerk does nice on the M-mod buco, but yea I think I will let the cranks on the spinning gear

I like to throws the scatter raps when walleye fishing. For some reason, those eyes hammer 'em. I only use them on spinning gear though.

You might have to switch gear to a dedicated crankbait rod.  You should have no problems with a medium powered, moderate action rod.  I use a M/M that is on the light side of a true medium and it thows my lightest balsas well.  The Scatter Rap is a rocket compared to my Lee Sission baits.

Very light baits probably best thrown on spinning gear or a noodle of a casting rod.

I have been throwing them on a dobyns 705 glass cranking rod with a chronarch ci4. Can get pretty good distance on it but it feels like a 704 would be perfect.

When you're talking about the cranks do you mean the shads or regular Scatter Rap crank? The cranks are over 1/4oz and I have no problems launching one plenty far with a 7' MH/M St. Croix Pro Glass with a 200E5 and 10lb Mustad Ultra line. I wouldn't try to cast the shads or minnows on casting gear though.

They are the shad waps. Guess I need to get some dedicated cranks then. Stick to spinning for wraps

I cast the cranks on spinning gear as well and use a 7' Cabelas M/F with a Quantum Catalyst PTi20 with 15# Power Pro with or without a 8# flouro leader. I was just watching an episode of "Linders Fishing Edge" with a segment on the scatter rap cranks and they were tossing them on spinning rods as well due to the light weight of the balsa lures. The setup "Al" was using was a 7' or so spinning rod and his real had high "vis" yellow braid with a flouro leader.

I throw them on both casting and spinning gear, the casting gear is a 7' W&M skeet s-glass cranking rod with a daiwa T3-B (hawgtech bearings) and 10 lb floro/hybrid, for spinning its a 6'6" M/F  with a pflueger president and 10 lb PP braid with a 20 lb 7' floro leader... the casting gear works better in moderate to calm wind conditions, the spinning shines in the wind... (if you want to see these things in action check out the scatter rap challenge on youtube)...

I always throw shad raps on spinning gear. The regular scatter rap cranks cast fine on my Curado 200e5 with 10 pound mono or fluoro on a 7' M BPS crankin' stick.
