Lasher Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 After throwing the A-rig the last 3-4 outings I still have not caught a fish. After whining and moaning to friend, he asked me if I'm throwing it around bait fish. After some thought, I realized I have not been seeing any bait fish at all, 90% of my fish have come from shakey heads in about 8-15 ft of water. So my question is, do you have to be around bait fish for the A-Rig to be effective? It's an awfully big lure that takes lots of energy to chunk and wind it without any success. Any advice is welcomed. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 I would not throw it unless you are marking baitfish. 2 Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 I've said it once and I'll say it again. If you're sick of your A-Rig not working, just add more hooks until you can blanket the entire lake with them or just start throwing something more potent- like dynamite. Quote
daiwaguy Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 You would have much greater success if you were around baitfish. Quote
basshole8190 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Throw it on structure and fish it slow. if you think its slow enough slow down some more. try to fish what depth the fish are holding. i spend more time on my df than i do on my deck casting when fishing the rig Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 My man, it´s not the A rig not working but why it´s not working, it can be location, it can be presentation, it can be both. If such thing as "one to rule them all" existed we wouldn´t have all the stuff we got and all the ways we got to work it. It´s not a matter of luck. Quote
TorqueConverter Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Bait fish? I'd say don't throw it unless you have bass fish marked on sonar suspending. Count it down and run it through them. I hate the rig but I did get bit real good last year after ice out targeting bass in their wintering holes. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 Are you using a shad scent with it? Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 One time I seen small pickerel eating bass fry. I just had to help my future of bass fishing they were being destroyed. I put on a small rapala in baby bass that matched the little bass fry. Within a few minutes I pulled out six small pickerel. Then released them. Things were calm when I left. My point is look for areas were the water is boiling with the baitfish swimming and jumping out of the water to save there lives. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 18, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 18, 2014 I would not throw it unless you are marking baitfish. X2. Find the bait, find the fish. Most of the time I fish the rig the trolling motor doesn't hit the water until I'm marking baitfish near structure or cover. Quote
Bamabassman30 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Me and my buddy caught 37lbs on it about 3 weeks ago I wasn't a believer until then the water temp was 53 we hit points all day and smoke em we used a 1/8 oz round jig head and cut open a strike king shadalicious 4.5" slid the head inside the bait and popped out the ring were you tie on to gave the bait better action we also used small blade on it hope it helps! Good luck! Quote
