Backlash123 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Went out yesterday, used the ramp behind the Sawgrass Recreation Park. The wind was blowing I'd say at least 20 knots, lots of fish but all were small. Caught most fish on swim baits (Flukes, Skinny Dippers), and had a few hits on frogs. I also tried a little flippin' (still learning), and had a few nice bites but no hookups. How did everyone else do? Quote

Avg weight was 2lbs, a couple of 3's and one 5.5lbr. Needless to say the wind was not blowing as hard on Saturday vs yesterday. Quote

Do you come in from Holiday Park, or is there a ramp on that side. I'm going to check Google Earth to see if there is a way to get there from the east side. If you don't mind me asking, which frog where you using. I've been using the Zoom Horny Toads in Watermelon Seed. Quote
shallow thinker Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Google earth it and you'll see there are 3 ramps along the west side of 27 to the north of 595/I-75. Some of the ramps are a bit rough so walk out on the dock first to have a look before backing down. Quote
1234567 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Are there snakeheads in the canal along 27? Quote

The first two ramps have been completely re-done by FWC, the third ramp about 6 miles north is fine, and there is another ramp about 6 more miles to the north at the broward palm beach border. This time around I launched at the 4th ramp because I fished the Holeylands first which is 6 miles West of that location. The holeylands was dead on Saturday but US 27 was on fire, despite the reports I was getting from anglers there. I guess no one was throwing frogs, LOL.. I was throwing hollow body frogs. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 Are there snakeheads in the canal along 27? No... but plenty of its big cousin, mudfish!! Quote
1234567 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I chased snakeheads last week along griffin road and nada! Caught a bunch of peacocks though. How about along sawgrass expressway?? Some guys like danny martin and captain shane are killing those things on youtube! I just want to catch one lol! Quote

I caught for the very first time 2 snakeheads, in Coral Springs. I fished with another member from this site along the canal that runs North on the West side along the Sawgrass Expy. We parked right off the highway on the West side of Coral Springs Drive. It's same canal system that runs through Markham park heading North. There are alot of snakehead there with plenty of bank available. Quote
1234567 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Lou, I think that is the place I was looking at on Google earth earlier?? I see that the canal on the west side of meets up the other to the north a little bit. I am probably going to drag the boat over for this trip. Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I also tried a little flippin' (still learning), and had a few nice bites but no hookups. Backlash, are you using a Snell knot to tie your Flipping hook? I would recommend it if not. Might be why you missed those bites. The way a Snell knot is tied, when you set the hook, it makes the hook shank point up. Thus making your hook up ratio go up 10 fold. Quote
topwaterrob Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I fished the alley today. Caught a lot of smaller sized fish and after a while tried some bigger baits to cut out the dink bite. Had a blast. Quote

I was fishing with a 1/2 oz tungsten weight, 4/0 Trokar flipping hook, with Reaction Innovations Kinky Beaver. They felt like good bites, but maybe I set the hook too soon, I'm thinking I have to wait till I feel the fishes weight before I set the hook. Is that correct method, or am I supposed to set the hook immediately? Quote

Backlash123 Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 Thanks for the tip. I'll be out there this Sunday in a club tournament. Let's see what happens... Quote

Backlash123 Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 I definitely felt a machine gun hit one time, and that's what I thought. The others felt pretty solid. I'm going to flip some more this weekend, hopefully I don't knock myself out with a 1/2 oz weight to the forehead... Quote
