Super User bigbill Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 This can be confusing to the youngsters who are just starting out in fishing on picking there first rod & reel setup. We all been there, money is tight, yet we want something decent. I actually saved my lunch money to buy fishing tackle. Ok what rod and reel would you suggest for a youngster just starting out. Lets say his first bass spinning outfit? Something that's affordable yet decent in quality. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 Berkley Lightning rod and any low end Shimano reel. = 50-60 bucks Quote
Washout Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Network with people that are smarter than you. By being on this site, you are ahead of the curve. If it's possible, meet up with people that are like-minded and have different techniques than you. Watch videos, read books and use the search function right here. Another great way to learn is to stay on the water as much as you can and perhaps watch someone scouting a lake before a tournament. If they see you catching fish, their interest is peaked, you are likely to swap information. I've never ran into someone that didn't love to talk fishing. I'll often ask about a different lake that I can't figure out to see what they say. If you are new and under budget constraints you may be able to get used equipment this way as well. The more people you have a relationship with, the better. The best way I've found to do that is keep a line wet. It's a constant education and more brains in the mix always speeds up a learning curve, especially when it takes you out of your comfort zone. Quote
240 LTS Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 BPS, PQ, 5'-6" - 6'-6" (depending how big/tall he or she is) , Med. combo with 10 lb mono. It will throw all the lures typically used and catch everything out there that swims in bass waters. If a larger fish breaks them off, it will be a lesson on how much pressure 10 lb line can take. If I had only one rod choice, it would be a 6-'6" Med spinning outfit. That is what I have for people on my boat that don't fish often. . Quote
Washout Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 As for a first setup in specific, a medium action, fast tip 6'6" or 7' paired with a cardinal 30 or a Mitchell reel for boat fishing or a 6' medium same reel for shore fishing. The overhead limbs and bushes can make a six footer difficult to wield sometimes. I too would cheapen up on the rods/reels to make bait more bait purchases. The Berkley lightning or clearance items at WM make good equipment budget friendly if you are willing to work for the bargains. I have less than $60 my spinning outfits (minus the line) except one. I didn't get them all at once and I probably worked way too hard on buying them clearanced out. Quote
