Mikell Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Simply, does handle length matter for flippin and pitching? Too long vs too short? Or is it all in what you become comfortable with in your own fishing skills? Quote
Super User .RM. Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 For filipping or pitching I wouldn't use anything under 10".. For using the fore arm leverage in fighting... Just the .02¢ of a builder... Tight Lines! 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Handle length is determined by balance and user comfort. Too short of a handle is not good for two handed casting or for trolling in a rod holder. For your purpose I suggest something that will lay against your forearm for support but not so long as to snag on clothing etc. Quote
Mikell Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 sounds like good info ive got a st croix legend tournament 7' medium/fast that has a shorter handle im not sure of the length exactly its not the newest model but no the oldest either lol and i also have a duckett ghost 7'3 medium heavy with a 15" handle i figured the 7'3 would be my pitchin flipping rod? do i have the right idea? I recently picked up a new St. croix, LTB, and purposely got the 7'3" H because of the longer handle. It helps me a lot with leverage and casting. 1 Quote

daiwaguy Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 The longer the better for me in that situation. I wouldnt mind it touching my elbow(actually wish most did) so I could really slam the hook home. And The more rod touching my arm the more I have confidence in feeling every little tap. 1 Quote

daiwaguy Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 the duckett rod def is long enough for that! I will have to look at that, but I have an 81.5" wingspan and from a comfortable reel palm to my elbow is around 17-18 inches so finding a rod that fits the Criteria seems impossible at times. Quote

Super User .RM. Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 You could always measure from the heel of the fighting hand to about 1" from the front of the elbow. That in this rod builders opinion would be the ideal length for a 1 piece rear grip on a pitching/flipping system... Tight Lines! 1 Quote

FlipnLimits Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 The longer, the better. Rods have become shorter and shorter in recent years. When I come home with a belly ache, it was a good day. I stick the butt end of the rod into my stomach upon the hookset. Not always but often. Does anybody else set the hook this way? FL Quote
