Winter Spinnerbait Fishing

They say one of the ideal winter spinnerbait techniques is to "slow roll" a single colorado blade along the bottom when the water is really cold.  I've been experimenting with this in the past couple months and wouldn't mind if you shared your winter spinnerbait techniques with me.

One of my favorite big fish techniques right after ice out. I normally just retrieve a single colorado bladed spinnerbait as slowly as I can while keeping the blade turning. A trailer hook is a must as they'll be moving slow and sometimes just nip the back of the bait. You can use a grub or pork trailer to help slow it down even more. I've never had much luck with the yo-yoing or pumping retrieve normally associated with the term slow rolling.

My winter spinnerbait technique goes a little like this: chunk it out and wind it in while watching it slide across the ice. I'd recommend going against that one as I've never had any luck with it. lol

Down south late winter coincides with pre-spawn & pre-spawn coincides a spinner bait/lipless crank bit.

Slow rolling a spinner bait is an ole school technique where a heavy 1/2 oz or bigger is cast shallow & retreive slowly keeping it close to or in contact with the bottom.

My weapon of choice is a Stanley Wedge 1/2 oz double gold willow leaf.

I like a heavy spinnerbait 1 oz + with a single big Colorado or Willow blade.

 

Either slow rolled or yo yo along bottom.

 

I have a bunch of old Stanley Titanium that are 1.5-2 oz and vibrate real good.

I've been using a single spin during winter almost as much as a jig. I keep it really simple by using either a 1/2 oz. or 5/8 oz. with a Hildebrandt #5 colorado and a white or white/chartreuse skirt. And I always use either an Uncle Josh #11 pork frog or split-tail eel in white.

 

If I'm fishing any deeper than 10' - 12' I'll switch to the 3/4 oz. size.

I have done equally well on a single Colorado and a double willow over the last couple weeks. No technique worked except reeling as slow as possible but still moving the blades. I tried the pump etc and no luck like some others posted above.

The old bass buster scorpion in white with a pork chunk was a classic cold water bait - single colorado, short arm, slooow retrieve.
