fishinthedacks Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Well I tried to piggy back this topic not realizing the guy was looking for a light weight mono. So really it doesn't mesh in the topic. He just hadn't mentioned it in the origional post. I am asking for a 65lb because the pro I had been talking to in BPS says no matter what when he is fishing frogs he uses a 65 lb braid and rarely has to change it etc. I wish I had picked his brain more but I'm one of those people that always feels I have 3 questions to ask someone. Not only did he hand pick a rod and reel for me and explain why etc but he also gave me his 411 on frog fishing dos and donts which is going to be a huge part of my arsenal. Now most the time I won't be fishing heavy cover but there is a HUGE pond I fish that for about 50 feet from shore to the shore all you can see is lily pads, and underwater trees so I want to be ready for all situations. Plus the bass can get from the Sacandaga lake to this pond and it's private property but I have permission to fish it and when I can get through the pads I've caught a lot of 5+lb'ers. I usually kayak through that to the clearing and fish the edge of the pads but this year I plan to face the crap head on. I did have someone point me towards a green steel line which I've never used before but just curious what you all think. Quote

Blues19 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I have used Power Pro with great success. I typically use 50 lb. I havent changed the line in 2 years, and its been good to go Quote

I havent changed the line in 2 years, and its been good to go I'm going on season number three with the power pro on my reels, and when I determine it's time to switch line I will just flip it because there is no memory so all that line that's never been used is sitting their waiting for me to switch it with the old stuff Tight lines Andrew Quote

Saves a few bucks there. Love the stuff. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 power pro is a good starting point. This season I'm trying smack down and fx2 Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I just switched to 65# from 50# about a year ago. I made the jump just for the peace of mind that it gives me knowing I'm fishing 65# braid. Thing is, I never had a single fish break me off while using 50#. I used 50# for years and it always got the job done so I know you don't need 65# to fish frogs effectively but as I said it's just the knowledge that the "extra strength" is there with the 65#. Right now I'm fishing P-Line Spectrex braid and am really liking it. It's very similar to Power Pro except it doesn't have as much of a coating. I'm also fishing PP on 3 or 4 rods and, as most of the others already pointed out, it's really good stuff as well. These two would be my recommendation but there are certainly other quality braids out there. Sufix Performance braid is good stuff. Don't get the 832 though because it sinks and kills the action of your frog. SunLine braid is good as well as Spiderwire Ultracast Ultimate braid. Quote
Maico1 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 65 Lb Sufix for me , like the confidence factor when fishing the heavy stuff like you described...... Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 Ive used 65# pp for years in slop to open water. Never had an issue. Some people like 50. Quote

frogflogger Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I use 50# sufix (not the 832) I tried 65 but when frog fishing I like to make long casts (where applicable) and I think the 50 gives me a little more distance - never had an issue with breakage and I turn the line once a year and use it for a few years. Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Power Pro has worked well for me. As for 50 vs 65#, I think it comes down to whatever you feel handles better. Either is plenty for frogging. BTW, we're practically neighbors, give a shout some time if you want to fish or need anything. 1 Quote
boostr Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I deffinetly want to fish the pads. All my gear have the PP 50#. I Just add a flouro or mono leader when I need it. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 Power pro is great. I use 50 pound for my frogging but our slop isn't as thick and a 5 pounder is a nice one around here. Thicker slop and bigger bass, go with the 65. Quote

Will be adding to my reel Wednesday. DVT you are literally five minutes away. I'm new to Canjo and have no one to fish with that's less than 45 mins away we should do some fishing once this weather clears up. Will send you a pm Quote
