keninaz Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I got my new Ride 115X up on the roof of the garage now. I use a boat trailer winch to crank it up as it makes thinks easy. After redoing my basic design and getting better pulley's and such it's done.I only wish that my SUV was a little shorter as I have to lower it when the SUV is outside and load the SUV outside.Oh well, it could be worse. And no, I have yet to figure out how to transport this yak with the Miata! Tylertut Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Looks good. Is that a Mazda Miata in the background? Quote
keninaz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Is the X pretty heavy? Yes it's heavy. With the optional elevated air core seat that weighs 15# by itself and the console with the fish finder and battery it comes in at about 96# according to my scale. Not light by all means but this is supposed to be a very stable platform. Quote
keninaz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Looks good. Is that a Mazda Miata in the background? Yes it is, a 2007 Touring Edition. I have really sticky rubber on it and it really handles very well. Quote
keninaz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 By the way, I used all HD hardware and rope in this install. The lowest weight handling component is rated at 280#. And most is rated at 360-420#. Better safe than sorry. Quote
THE_Vue's Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Im planning to get the X too. Is it possible for one person to left the X ontop a car by yourself or would you need two person? I was either thinking about the ride X or the new native 12 ultimate FX. The center console is really nice though Quote
keninaz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 I am 67 and I don't want to lift it up by myself but I think I can put a pad on the back side of my SUV and only lift one end at a time. Once the front it up and into position you could slide the yak up and into position. At least that's my plan. My wife has the SUV visiting relatives down south right now so I will have to wait to try that method. Needless to say lighter is better but when you have to go overhead nothing is light as you get older. I wanted a stable boat that would handle some weight, was self bailing and was stable and everyone I talked to says the Wilderness Ride 115X is good fro all of that. On the downside you have the weight which should keep it in the water where you want it unless it's really windy. It's not a speed demon either but that's OK as I bought it for fishing. I am in the process now of installing a newly released Lowrance Elite 4X HDI sonar/Fish finder. It might be overkill but I like the specs and having 4 frequencies on it. One nice thing about the console is that it removed really quick so that takes away some 7# or so. And my elevated air core seat that was optional is another 15# that can be removed pretty easy. That does drop the weight of the boat down to around 72# or so. Quote
THE_Vue's Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Thats kinda what I was thinking of just lifting it up overhead with the seat off. Quote
THE_Vue's Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 But yeah that setup you have right there is gonna awesome for the season. I can't wait for mine Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 Im planning to get the X too. Is it possible for one person to left the X ontop a car by yourself or would you need two person? I was either thinking about the ride X or the new native 12 ultimate FX. The center console is really nice though I have personally loaded a 14' tarpon, 12' commander and a few other boats myself and it really isn't that bad. It is all about finding the balance point of the boat which in some cases isn't where the handles are located as was the case with my coosa. There are also other methods using a bath rug to only have to lift half the boat at once and slide it on to the rack. Unless your vehicle is tall, loading pretty much any one man boat is doable with practice. I now have a wrangler with a rack which is a little harder to do as it is taller than i am but it is still manageable. Now if i get a heavier pedal drive boat like i want, i will also most likely be getting a trailer to make things even easier. Quote
THE_Vue's Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Im looking into the bath rug right now and seems to be a really great idea. Thanks Quote
keninaz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 I have a '08 Yukon that I picked up used not to long ago and it has 20" rims/tires on it so it's pretty tall. I still think I can slide it up and into place by myself. The bath rug is a good idea as they normally have anti skid on the back side of them that you can leave face down on the paint so it does not move. I have a thick old style quilted moving pad I thought I would use but I also have some anti skid laying around that would not hurt to put under the pad. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 17, 2014 Super User Posted March 17, 2014 One thing i will say is that if you have a taller vehicle i would highly recommend getting an aftermarket rack and not using the factory ones. The factory ones will hold but when you are lifting higher over your head i personally feel more secure dropping it down on a sturdier rack than what comes on most factory set ups. I tried the bath mat thing and it seemed to be more hassle than it was worth but i know many swear by it...besides, the bath mat deal won't work on my Jeep now anyways. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I used a Yakima system on my WRX Wagon. Worked great. Put pool noodles for cushion, good to go. Quote
basshole8190 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I have a tricked out ascend 128t and it was a beast to car top before i added the battery and tm bass yak style. after two trips i found a used jetski trailer and converted it now it is easy peezy except backing that baby trailer down Quote
keninaz Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 And I have already figured out that to make things easier on the body I will remove the X series console that weighs in at nearly 10# with the battery and FF and removed the upgraded Air Pro elevated seat. Very comfortable but it does weigh in at nearly 15#! Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I bought a Ride 115 over the winter. I've not used it yet but I did put it in the shed and that thing is heavy! I guess when I bought it I kept thinking of those small looking white water kayaks and thinking - all kayaks must be light! But once I felt how heavy my kayak is, the reality sunk in quick - this thing is heavy. Hmm.. Interesting idea about a used jet ski trailer. I might have to do some research on that. Quote
keninaz Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Yes I have even thought about buying something like this. For the price it would do fine. http://www.harborfreight.com/1090-lb-capacity-40-1-2-half-inch-x-48-inch-mini-utility-trailer-with-12-inch-four-lug-wheels-and-tires-90153.html Quote
