Super User Root beer Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 A classmate of mine bought shares in Tesla Motor at $33/share. Go ahead and look up their current price....... He even TOLD me about investing in them at that price and I was waiting for hedge fund managers to pull the plug on them. (Only reason why they were staying afloat anyway.) Oh, well. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 I'm still trying to catch up to a long time client of mine so I can have the same tax problems he did. This gentleman had made the habit of buying stocks in at least one IPO each year. On most of those, the stocks either failed to grow or in some cases became worthless, except for this one stock he bought quite a few years ago. Who would have thought that buying two thousand shares of a little company called Microsoft would cause him such a problem with capital gains taxes! My best effort so far was another IPO back ten years ago. Maybe some of you have heard of them. Google? I sure wish I'd bought a whole lot more of those shares. One of my best friends was employee #19 at Google. He went from a 700 sq ft studio apartment to a 7,000 sq ft compound with a 14 car garage. LBH met him and hung out at his house on one of his visits out here. Quote

It happens, I was friends and classmates with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Overton (Cheesecake Factory), both grew up in a very modest environment. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 One of my best friends was employee #19 at Google. He went from a 700 sq ft studio apartment to a 7,000 sq ft compound with a 14 car garage. LBH met him and hung out at his house on one of his visits out here. True Story. When I discussed the idea of purchasing that stock with my former stock broker (key word being former), he told me that it was his company's position that no one should buy that stock. He was in complete agreement with that assessment and told me that they would only sell it to me if I signed a waiver to protect them against the losses I was bound to suffer. Funny thing was that I was preparing his income taxes at the time, and it didn't take long to see that he had purchased a few shares as well. I'm still not sure why I never charged him for my investment advice. These days, whenever I do a search, I get a little internal smile when I see the growth in banner and tower ads on the first results page! Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 Now if you would have asked me if I had at least $50k worth of fun with the car? This picture would pretty much sum it up. One of the two of you would have had to have been down right flexible to have that kind of fun ...in that car !! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 18, 2014 Super User Posted March 18, 2014 My first jeep a 72 wagoneer with 25k miles i bought for 1500 in 1998 or so....sold it after the power steering pump leaked on the manifold and caught fire to the engine bay for 2500. My next wrangler i bought in 2000, was a 95, for 8k and sold it 10 years later for 8k so not to bad there... As far as stocks go i have done pretty nicely here latley in the legal mary jane biz after buying stocks that were pennies in november of last year and some are up as high as $30 or so. The one penny stock that burns me up, even though i made money was one that i bought on a whil, put 1k in the stock at around .05 or so. Ove the next few weeks it continued to climb up and was at over $2 a share. As most people who play with these stocks know, the majority of the stock increases are all false and based on those penny stock emails that are out there in an effort to falsely drive up the price....well this was one of those. I went into a meeting and the price was at about $2.50 a share....when i came out of hte meeting an hour later it dropped to $1.75. I sold and still made a ton of cash based on my investment but it could have been a lot more....i think the company has since closed down or at the very least changed ticker symbols. Quote

macmichael Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Bought shares of Netflix. Rode it to a nice $5000 profit. Sold it. Wish I still had it. Normally I buy high and sell low. lol Quote
tbone1993 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 My friend. Jeep Grand cherokee 06 $4,000, new tires $400. Possibly spetn $5000 on it. Sold it for $200 after the transmission went out. First off never buy an older jeep grand cherokee. Second never pay $2,000 over what the car is worth. 3rd dont sell it for what the transmission place says they'll take for it because god knows they know hot to fix it for cheap. He really needs someone to manage his money. Quote
