I don't start threads as a rule but I will on this topic. I watched the Classic recap show after work. I thought, good deal. I want to see what they say about the top five. Some how they failed to mention second place, at all, what so ever. Okay, I have a bias and I'll admit it. I think Paul Mueller is a great guy and has a real career ahead of him. He set a classic record for largest single day weight. Well he's not one of the cereal box anglers but come on, to omit his accomplishment in the mix was shameful. Don't get me wrong, the accomplishments of Tharp, Evers and Howell should never be discounted but leaving the Federation guy's accomplishment out was a discredit to the program. I'm done. Time for my pills.

Good Point. I lost my full interest in BASS when they took the AM's out of the back of boats. Sorry...old fashioned ... still believe it's the average joe who pays their bills. Any pro who whinned about AM catching his fish just didn't quite make it with me. There's things that could of have been done....three fish limits etc. Oh well...I'm old and set in ways. Tight LInes

 It is a shame..... What Paul did was a bigger accomplishment. A northern angler going down south to an unfamiliar lake fishing against pros and anglers who call the lake home. I wonder if it is the fact that he is a northern fisherman ? Or is it just the media trying to give the pros there time in the spotlight for there sponsorships ? I think it is the fact that he is a northern angler. BASS has always had some kind of mindset against northern fisherman...

I dont like it either....... as my arguement is once Paul "figured it out" going to chatter instead of lipless, he actually had the biggest tournament as shown by his saturday and sunday bags. His weights got bigger and a lot the field got smaller.  

 

that said I think what probably happened is friday was so bad nobody kept up with him saturday.... then they probably kinda thought that bag was a fluke so he backburnered again...... either way he should have gotten just as much air time as anyone.....more I say since he did finish 2nd.

 

what better way to promote you sport than showing someone "making it" through your A. AA, AAA farm system..... it shamefull if he didnt get quality coverage.

 

quick story:

I fished a open tournament of a club that was BASS affliated....... I showed up that morning and paid and launched.... I asked for a schedule and additional info.

The BASSguy told me "you just pay your money and show up"

I said " You cant give me a schedule? or anything?"

BASSguy : " man, we fish a lot of big water"

I said: " I see that, this lake is a full 650 acres."

 

I left before weight in and said NEVER will I fish with those arse hats again.

I love our organization up here. A lot of great people including Paul. It's a d**n shame he didn't get the coverage he should've but at the end of the day, thats medias ideology, he didn't exactly win the classic. I actually thought Mercer did a excellent job in supporting Not only Paul but the nation, CT and Brian Kerchal's win/legacy.... On a side note I'm happy that Howell won over majority of the other guys.

Our club is BASS affiliated.  A lot of guys fish our club that have clubs in their hometowns.  Some drive 45 minutes to the meeting.  That guy sounds like a clown.

I was a little disappointed in not seeing him as well.  I would have much rather seen the top 5 guys instead of watching them weigh the fish a 3rd time.

that was the exact deal I was in..... their meetings were 45-60 minutes from me.

 

 

and I should clarify.... when I say those people I mean THAT chapter/club..... I don't hold a few jerks against the entire Bassnation

As much as it sucks, I'm pretty sure it is just a result of him being an unknown guy. There is definitely no bias against northern anglers. Mike Iaconelli is from the north and he's constantly covered even though he hasn't done anything in years now.

I have three clubs within 15 minutes of me. Was about to join the closest one when I started really looking into them. Turned out their schedules for the past 3 years were all exactly the same with the majority on the waterways that the state and national tournaments were held on. After talking to a few of them I got the very distinct impression that all they cared about was their affiliation with FLW, nothing about the club. Ended up joining a club an hour away that fishes all over the north east, great guys who all bust on each other and still gives me the same opportunities. Good sticks in this one too.

Just mentioned the other day to Paul a lot of the guys around the net feel bassmaster did lousy job of covering you. He said he feels they did a good job, and appreciates all the support from you all.

Paul has a nice write up on page 36 of the April 2014 Bassmasters Magazine and a second write up on page 48 of the April 2014 Bass Times.

 

I am sure Zona will have him on the Bassmasters TV show sooner or later.

 

It is disappointing that Paul did not get his TV time that he deserved.  NASCAR has it set up that the top three drivers get interviewed and TV time after each race plus they add the one driver that got screwed if he is around. I would have thought BASS would have done this on TV as BASS seems to try to parallel the NASCAR format.

 

As Paul starts to win the Elite series tournaments he will get more air time and we will see him more and more.

 

For anyone to think that BASS favors southern guys over western and northern guys is ridiculous. It is my opinion that the guys covering the Classic screwed up. Here is a short story about BASS and their Open tournaments.

 

I worked two Northern Opens on the Historic James River a few years ago. I met and spoke with the guys handling the set up and production. Some of the guys were great; sorry to say a few were board out of their minds and just wanted to get the tournament over so they could go home.

 

The local guys assisting with the tournament and the spectators were excited about the tournament; the BASS guys were tired and could care less who won or who lost. This was an eye opener. To see how BASS produced the Open and how some of their employees acted was extremely interesting.

 

To us, the Classic, Elite and Open tournaments are fun to watch and participate. For the guys and gals working these tournaments it is just another day at the office and it is the same old same old pattern day in and day out.

 

I remember a very interesting statement by Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles. Cal was being interviewed by a reporter when the reporter asked Cal why he was hustling and playing so hard in the latter innings when Baltimore had such a big lead. Cal replied that he always gave 100% on all plays as there are people in the stands who came to see him play for the first time and he did not want to disappoint them.

 

If the BASS production staff had Cal's attitude I am sure Paul and other pros would get more air time and we would see better produced shows.

that's awesome about cal. My fave ball player of all time is Will Clark. He's another one that had a ton of passion for what he loves.

I thought they showed Paul alot on the coverage.  It was top heavy with big names though.  Must have a budget issue, not alot of TV cameras on the boats.  Mostly the Go Pros did the work.  Jordan Lee and Paul could have won that thing if they had four days.  Also I don't believe the northern angler stuff.  They have fallen in love with Brandon Paulnik.  Heck he is from Idaho...  Just more southern guys in the mix.  More lakes to get good on.  Bssmasters is still on tv and that is what means the most to me.   Would love a fishing only channel!

A few points about Bassmaster Classic/Elite tournament coverage

 

1. It would not be possible to have cameras in ant boats if there were co-anglers. Putting a tv camera in a chase boat is not going to achieve the same close up coverage nor the audio that comes with having the cameraman in the boat with the pro.

 

2. Only the Elite tournaments( 8 tournaments/year and the classic)-did away with co-anglers. All BASS opens have co-anglers. Limit is 3 for them.

 

3. The 'average joe' doesn't pay a dime toward the pro's expenses, or the cash prizes. The Elite pros pay about $5,000 per tournament entry fee--figure it out for one season. Corporate sponsors do contribute  and do so on the basis that it is advertising. When has anyone paid a fee to watch a bass tournament? So the 'average joe' don't contribute much--other than buying sponsers' products for their own use.

 

4. While I agree that Paul did great at the Classic and deserves all the acolades he can get, it was his first and only Classic. He definitely earned his way in--under the rules--fair and square. But the 46 or so Elite Pros --even the first year guys--fished all season long against 99 other very, very good full time Elite professionals, at great expense to themselves to get there. And, some have been doing so for decades and have won many other major tournaments along the way--including a Classic or two. They deserve the lions share of the coverage. So 'paying your dues' can be a relative thing.

 

While many are quick to complain about BASS, few seem to offer much except "token support" in the way of dues. It takes a lot of money and even more talent to be a successful professional fisherman at the highest level and it must be pretty hard to do--otherwise everyone of us would have qualified for the Classic.
