Went to BPS Spring Classic sale today. While I was checking out the frogs a guy asked me what frogs I have been using or looking forward to use this year etc. Then asked what I was using rod/reel wise. Took me a minute to realize I was talking to a pro he just wasn't in jersey etc he was there with one of the pros that was there today for lessons etc. So after doing a lot of talking etc telling him what I was looking to spend on my new rod/reel combo he moved me on to a Shimano Curado 201g6 (they didn't have any 7's left and no right handed at all but good thing I'm left handed). And the the Abu Garcia Veritas 7'0". The total would have normally been $300.00 but today got the combo for 179.99 + tax. After checking tackle warehouse looks like I got an amazing deal. What does everyone think about this combo for a frog rod and reel. The pros there both thought it was a great combo for the 200.00 range. I'm more than happy myself and got some other really good deals. Just looking to see what yall think.

So for under 200.00 what would you have chosen? Just curious.

It should work out well for you! 7' is a good length for a froggin' rod. It'll give you a little more accuracy over a longer one which really helps when you're trying to hit holes.

Also as for the longer rod I couldn't do it. The only one worth buying which was the first the said was 7'6 and 8'0 but was 169.99 and I didn't and couldnt spend that with the 99.99 reel. The main rod/reel combo im going for this year is almost 500.00 so for my frog combo 200.00 was my limit so thats why they moved me to this combo which the rod was their second choice I should throw that out there. This was their first reel regardless of my price range. They were showing me a bunch of 200.00-250.00 reels they said this put to shame. I mean yes they were pros but they were also a BPS for a reason so maybe sales was part of it but so far I am happy just wondering what you would pick for under 200.00 range.

Sounds like you made out pretty good. I really like the veritas rods. I'm not a shimano guy though. Nothing against them the are good reels just not what I like. But either way that's a great price on the setup. Congrats.

You're good. I ran/run a similar combo and no problems at all. Enjoy your new purchase. Great deal.

Thanks guys. I've got a big smile on my face and to be honest the real reason I'm so happy about this is the wife (truthfully fiance but I always call her the wife because I know shes the one)  wanted to buy me a new frog rod/reel. I had the money but once I gave her the engagement ring she wanted to get me something special and asked me what a good price would be and tried to hand me 400.00... I said no babe thats too much (1. didnt want  her to spend too much and 2. didnt want her to know what I really spend on my hobbies) so as she was with me I had to stay under my 200.00 limit and make the best value purchase and I kept telling her I got over a 300.00 deal and even got a couple new KVD Strike Kings frogs on sale so kept telling her almost a 400.00 deal. So she felt like she had spent 400.00 on me anyways and was incredibly happy.

Money aside I feel great about the purchase, so does she and at the end of the day thats all that matters. I just wanted to see if I really got the best or close to deal/purchase for my "budget".

I just got the same rod for Frog fishing, but I bought a Revo S during the reel trade in,  I ended up getting  a Curado 7 and 6 yesterday and now I am wondering if I want to make the curado g7 the frog reel. Ive been using a 6.2:1 gear ratio the past few years so I am not too concerned about that.  I think I may stick with the Revo, but I may go with a curado. We could have the same combo! Im pretty stoked about my purchase as well.  Good Work sir!  You can fish a jig on that combo too

Definitely a great deal you got.  Especially on the Curado, wish I was able to afford one...but I've splurged my savings on "NEEDS" already.  I have two reels without a home too.

Nothing wrong with having your priorities in order.

Exactly! We probably all have friends that have much cheaper combos and catch fish with no problems. Your combo is absolutely fine.

Sweet deal! I was thinking about going to BPS this weekend to get the Curado G for $99, but I decided I should probably save up a bit more until the next sale. I think the Veritas is a perfect rod for this! Nice!!!! I didn't read this, but maybe I missed it… is this a medium heavy or heavy rod? I think the Veritas is pretty heavy even in the MH power.

It's a medium. They didn't have any heavy left. It was certainly slim pickens yesterday for sale items.Place was packed.

The line for the catch and release pond was over 2 hours. I'd never do that again. The kids were happy to catch a fish but the truth is all of them caught over 100 fish last year and the small fish they had in that pond were not worth their time. The fish weren't biting by the time they got to the front so I convinced them to open a different bait (they were using the orange balls they switched to white waxies) Fish started biting again (imagine that) I also had some berkley scent  so when my four year was ready to go I cracked the seal and rubbed a little bit on because it got so bad they were just snagged the fish for the kids so kids were catching fish by their gills, tails etc so I made sure my son caught his the right way the way he has since he was two. No snagging bs that isn't really fishing. (not that catching fish in a barrell is either haha)

The did get a free tackle trey and free picture with the fish etc so to make it more fun for them even though they have their own tackle boxes I add to all the time I opened up one of mine and let them pick out a couple of soft plastics and one older lure a piece so it was like they got to go shopping too.

Also I'm not second guessing myself at all. I'm happy, she's happy. I haven't been able to put the combo down haha. At least once every few hours I'm pulling it out practicing my "Walking the frog". Envisioning that top water blow up..... Almost seems real... Almost.

I'm sure we are all guilty of this and definitely do this during winter especially.
