I've been looking at the restocking the tackle box thread, and bait monkey threads. While the bait monkey has gotten me, as well, I'm starting to think my money may be better spent getting some of the other necessities at this point. You know, the less exciting stuff. My question for you is, what things, other than new lures, do you guys consider necessities or almost necessities in your boat/tackle box? I just really got back into fishing a couple years ago, and I haven't accumulated all of the useful tools. For example, I picked up a nice pair of pliers last summer, and it sure made life nicer. So, what do I need to get?

Nail Clippers for cutting off the tag line super close to the knot.  This helps out tremendously when trying to avoid bringing back clumps of weeds when jigging and worming.

Split Ring Pliers for swapping out trebles

Long nose pliers for gut hooked fish

Lure Retriever because its a great investment and will save you a lot of heartache.

Flashlight because even though you may not fish at night, the inside of a fish's mouth gets pretty dark around dusk and dawn and it can be hard to even see the hook sometimes.

Polarized Sunglasses because they work

A zip cord to attach your nail clippers to your waist so that you never have to search for a tool to cut your line.

Good list Gangley. I'll add...

First aid kit (or at least some tape & band aids for your tackle box)

Sunscreen

Spare hat

Line pick

Hook sharpener

I have a mini retractable box cutter that I use much more than clippers

An oar

I find binoculars handy for scouting shoreline

Rain suit

Fire extinguisher

Ziplock bags

Spare bottle of water (or 2)

Spare pair of long-nosed pliers

Throw cushion (and anything else your DNR requires)

While this sounds like a lot, I don't have a big fancy boat and most of this fits in 2 (small) plastic storage bind under each seat.

Matches or bic lighter stored in a ziploc bag.

Copies of current fishing license, boat registration, etc.

I have to agree with the lure retriever as said above. My uncle made me one and it has already saved me a few hundred dollars.

* Basic set of tools

* Electrical Tape

* Spare spark plugs

* Spare fuses

* Toe Rope for when the above won't fix the problem

I won't repeat the items already mentioned.

For your boat add the following to the list:

spare prop

spare cotter keys for the prop nut

charged fire extinguisher

air horn

spare prop for trolling motor

wing nut, washers, and sheer pin for trolling motor

I want to be able to loosen or tighten every nut, bolt or screw on my boat and fishing truck, so I carry enough tools to be able to do that. I've checked most of the screws, nuts & bolts, so I really think I've got that covered. One set stays in the boat and another set stays in the truck. In my fishing truck I carry a 3 ton shop jack, to deal with tire issues, and a 4 foot extension for the lug nut wrench, (I'm not the strongest guy in the world, so I appreciate the extra leverage.)

I carry a 12 volt air compressor and a 12 volt extension cord so I can go from the truck cigarette lighter to the trailer tire, and a couple of cans of that fix a flat stuff. I know many tire guys don't like that fix a flat stuff, but if you are caught out in the boonies, it will get you back to the garage.

I carry a few rolls of duct tape in the fishing truck and in the boat. Same goes for black electricians tape. I have a couple of circuit testers, 1 for boat and one for truck.

I keep a heavy duty tow strap in the truck and 150 feet of heavy duty nylon rope in my boat.

I keep a couple of sets of jumper cables, 1 for truck and the other stays in the boat at all times.

I keep 4 wheel chocks bungeed to the trailer at all times, and 3 orange traffic cones with name & address so I can save the space in front of my motel room.  It takes a real jerk to poach your parking spot once you've marked it with cones.

2 first aid kits (boat & truck) I keep several changes of clothes (seasonally appropriate) and a set of coveralls.

Several different flashlights & lanterns. 12 volt charger for the phone.

I know I'm leaving out stuff. My fishing truck is pretty full. Stuff I've convinced myself that I might need some day.

I fish by myself most of the time, so I try to be self sufficient, but I try to leave space for a passenger in my truck, I really do.

Already I need to modify.  A spare tire for the boat trailer is a necessity.  Every year I see guys who don't carry a spare trailer tire and I know they are just asking for it.  Generally it is guys with a newer boat and they bought it as a package and a spare trailer tire wasn't part of the package.

Looks like I should be fighting off the bait monkey, in order to supply my boat & truck w/some of these necessities. I am one of those guys who got my boat & trailer w/no spare, however, last year I only pulled the boat about 20 miles from home. Before my big trip this spring, a new tire will be mounted. Thanks for all the ideas. I never had a boat, until last spring, so I'm still figuring out all the things I need to get.

I always keep a bottle of Simple Green in my boat. Its good for all clean up needs. All my fishing buddys chew tobacco and they dont always make it into the water. I fish the Illinois River a lot and i usually hook an Asian Carp in the side. Those things get on the boat and bleed and slime all over the place. Good to have a quick cleaning solution. I also wear a helmet while im using the outboard so i dont get knocked out by a flying carp.
