papajoe222 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I'm contemplating getting one of these for my grandson to learn using a baitcaster on. Just wondering if anyone can give me some insight? TW reviews are mixed, but I'm a Daiwa guy and the size of the reel is perfect for teaching a kid or lady not to mention I'm familiar with the casting controlls so I'd give it a shot unless someone has had a poor experience. Smallmouth Hunter Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I would stay away from that reel.. I have read several reviews saying that the spool "buzzes" and have actually fished with one a few times. Every aird that I used had a buzzing spool. I am not sure why it does this, but I didn't have the time to take it apart and examine it. Quote

Had used cabelas points and got that combo when it came out it isn't a bad reel at all just get what you pay for. The rod is pretty good tho. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted March 14, 2014 Super User Posted March 14, 2014 I'd spend a little more for the Exceler, or save and get an older model Exceler. I prefer thèm over the Aird. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I agree i would get the older model exceler for like 65.00 it has mag-z breaks and an aluminum frame, far superior to the arid in my book... Mitch Quote

I haven't got my hands on that reel but judging from what I know of it, I'd say stay away. It's not that it is bad but that it is identical to a Laguna for more money. It's a $90, $60 reel. I'd take a Laguna over a Abu Max or pretty much anything else in the price range but I wouldn't pay $90 for a $60 reel painted orange and black. The Arid rods seem decent for the money. Quote

I just picked up the older model of the exceler from cabelas. 49.99 for my 7 yr old/my backup reel. Also cabelas prodigy reel are on sale, they are built based off the daiwa exceler. Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Thanks guys. I think I'll wait and see how he adapts to my older procaster. I can always get him a better reel later on. Quote
daiwaguy Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I see this is already answered. I 100 percent agree with the old Exceler. You will save half the money and litterally have a much better reel. I honestly cant believe the Aird ever made it onto the market. It is a total disappointment. I gave the ones I once had to a friend. Quote
