Do You Fish The Solunar Tables?

Just looked and saw that this sun and mon are 5star days from around 11a-3. Do they really work?

I've never noticed any increase or decrease in success from those calendars. I don't plan fishing trips around those calendars, but I do usually check out the days that I already plan to fish.

I am a strong believer in the Farmers Almanac's Calender. I really do notice a difference and usually have alot of success.

Yes I was mainly fishing by the mauri charts. You need to figure and adjust the best fishing times for your time zone in your area.

I caught my PB of 10# @ 5:30 am when the charts said the fishing was "GOOD EARLY". I also had other great fishing trips going by these charts. I did get these charts in OutDoorLife (Mauri charts) but it's no longer in the magazine.

I think there are other factors that mix in with *just* the solunar table. I've been out on 5 star days smack in the best times and couldn't buy a bite for the cost of my kayak, lures, and fishing gear.

 

I've been out on days that were 1 star and absolutely had a blast catching bass.

 

So for me, I pay attention to these things, but have not found them to be true all the time. More of a suggestion than "dude, you're missing ALL THE FISH if you don't go out when we tell you!"

 I bought Rick Taylor's Prime Times calendar for this year.  I'm having fun looking at it.  Do I believe in it?  Not really.  But it it's something to look at when it is cold outside and seeing it hanging up on the wall makes me think of fishing and warm weather.  I do recommend it if you have fifteen or so dollars to blow.  And I do think there is something to the sun cycles through the day.  But that's pretty simple too - four times a day:  midnight, morning, noon, evening.  Actually, I'm glad I purchased the calendar and will probably buy the 2015 calendar when it comes out.

I've tried fishing the solunar tables, but have found that I have much better luck fishing lakes, ponds and rivers.

I used to think that there was really something to those but nobody I ever talked to paid much attention to them. When I was working I fished whenever I could, now that Im retired I fish nearly every day and at night and don't think about the tables one way or the other.

No, I don't use the solunar tables, I have an astrologer and a psychic advisor to tell when the best times to fish are.

Those solunar tables are written at least a year ahead of time and maybe more.  The person writing them can have absolutely no idea or concept of local environment or weather systems. 

I understand the concept of sun/moon rise and setting, and tides, but the local weather has a great affect on "catching".

As preciously stated, I get to go fishing so seldom that when I get a chance, I go.  Tables are of no concern at all.

When I was young in the 1970's, I was a big disciple of Doug Hannon "The Bass Professor". Doug talked about the Full Moon and New Moon quite a bit.

In a nutshell: the 3 days before, on or after the Full/ New Moon is the highest probability of catching the larger bass in the body of water your fishing.

I have keep a journal of all the Bass I've caught that were 4 pounds and over for many, many years and the results bare this out.

I believed Mr. Hannon (R.I.P.) back then and still use the Rick Taylor Solunar Tables to this day.

It's just my thing, I know, but it gives me hope and more confidence on those particular days.

I love the look on the face of the guys that live by these charts when you ask them ( why didn't you catch anything )

but they always come up with a reason

in the most literal sense, everything revolves around the sun….  

i wouldn't use these tables as guide to go fishing or not, if i have the chance i'm going fishing period.  now one time this may play into it a bit differently is when it's really hot, then i'll use the tables to find the days prior to and just after the full moon and will try my best to fish at night on for those few days.  if we were talking deer hunting then i absolutely believe in the calendar, as there is no argument to the fact that the deer will be moving at certain times dependent on the sun/moon.  this always makes me lean toward the thought that the fish behave in the same manner….

 I fish whenever I have free time. I do have more luck for big fish around full and new moons. When I am night fishing the full moon makes a HUGE difference. I do not plan my day time fishing trips around the new or full moons. I go when I can. Anytime on the water good or bad sure beats working !!

I look at them every now and again, but it really doesn't matter what it says I'm still going fishing. I won't let that dictate a trip or anything like that. I do however try to make a mental note of when the major and minor feeding periods are and try to be on a spot with the most potential during those times.

I have a friend who swears by them in spite of much evidence to the contrary. I believe the charts that try to break each day down into several sections and assign each a fishing value is going too far. I do think WRB sums it up best: We do need to pay attention to natural cycles. There is evidence that the moon has an impact on fishing. This seems to be a major factor during the spawn, as Catt says. Night fishing during the spawn with a full moon has produced my PB and many of my biggest bass.
