Ya, so read the whole article.  He wasn't disciplined for his support of the NRA.  The shirt had images of guns on it. That violated their dress code, and that prompted the request to turn his shirt inside out. He refused, and THAT prompted the suspension - not the shirt or its message.

 

If the shirt simply was text supporting the NRA, there wouldn't have been an issue to begin with.

 

Let's not sensationalize this beyond what it is.

 

Also...let's keep the political comments and innuendos out of this discussion.  One such comment has already been removed.

His shirt was inappropriate. I remember a while back I wore a shirt with a gun on it in school and everyone warned be it wasn't allowed by the rules, neither was boodly/gore photographs. I didn't get in trouble though because there wasn't people so overly sensitized like there is today.

I bet if anyone wore a "raising the flag over iwa jima" or "washingtons crossing" picture shirt the school wouldn't care.

Heck I'm only 27 I've been out of school for almost 10 years now which isn't long. I remember I used to have a gun rack in my truck and would leave my shot gun in it and go to school after hunting in the morning. Was a no no then but no one cared I shot 2 doe one morning and had them hanging over my tail gate while in gym we stoped and admired my shooting lol. I went to a small school though my graduating class was 47 people and we were one of the largest.

I taught diesel tech at the vocational school in my county and that class was full of farm boys and country kids. I had to warn my students to take there racks out of there pick ups or else there "maybe consequences" no one ever did or got in trouble though.

When I was in the 8th grade (1969) I did paper on trap and skeet shooting. For the oral presentation I brought a 12 gauge shotgun to school. Nobody flipped out and I got an A. If I did that today, there would be a swat team locking down the school. It's a different world alright.

Im gonna have to disagree with you on this one.  NY is almost as bad as California.  The media has made it so that anything to do with guns or the NRA is like devil worshiping. The schools have gone overboard on what kids are getting in trouble for, from finger guns to bubble guns. Hell, one school in California has banned american flag tshirts one the so called mexican "independence day". How do you ban your own countrys flag in support of another country?

Again, taking a headline and not revealing the story behind it.  In the California case you reference, it was related to gang violence between Mexican and American gangs at a high school,  The display of shirts with American flags on Cinco de Mayo nearly caused a riot, so the school banned them.  The Supreme Court upheld the ruling in favor of the safety of students.

 

I agree with the others - it's a different world than when we grew up.  Things are no longer viewed at face value, but rather by the danger they could pose or represent.

 

I also agree the media has overhyped the use of firearms used during crimes.  Take note of the recent massacre in China where knives were used to kill people.  And there was another incident in China at a school where 20 kids were injured and 1 teacher killed by a knife-wielding man, which happened just a few days after Sandy Hook.  Neither incident got much air time on the news - maybe because it was in a different country, maybe because it's not as sensational without a gun.

Gand related or not, IMO its not right. You dont ban your countires flag in favor of another country. Period. This is America, not Mexico. I bet you they dont ban Mexican flag shirts on July 4th, because if they did the Mexicans would be screaming they dont get any respect and they arent treated fairly.

BUT if you ban one thing in the Flag example, you have to ban it all. Rules are great as along as they are fair, balanced, and enforced.

I can agree somewhat....... but I think where the line is when there is good chance someone will pull a drive by on said school, just ban it all.

School attire should be non logo, non descript for everyone attending the school, American, mexican, or otherwise.

If you kneew there was a chance for violence would you send your child to school in the shirt? I wouldnt, but I would also look for another school, but many dont have that chance.

The school celebrates May 5th, so its ok to wear mexican flag attire and wave their flags. But you are right, if you ban one you have to ban it all, you cant pick and choose. Maybe the school should take care of the gang problem first, worry about what they wear after.

I have read my girlfriend's childrens social studies book and I dont like the vocabulary used...... I have told him(he is 9) learn it to make a good grade on your test

Grew up the same way....Welcome the millenial generation the new hippies.....or are they yuppies....Heck I don't think they know they contratdict themselves.

Honestly, every school from gradeschool to college should institute a uniform and it should be manditory. The school should find a bulk supplier at low cost so that there is no distinction on whos who. It would cut down on bullying in the k-12 environment and teach people to dress the part in college.

 

I just recently left my almamater as an employer. I graduated in 2005. The way these young women dress today is borderline crazy. It leaves absolutely NOTHING to the imagination, you see it ALL.

 

The kid in highschool whos parents doesnt buy him nice stuff gets pushed into a group of others with the same quality of life. Its a mess to say the least. I was what some would consider popular in highschool, but what made me different from most was that I socialized with everyone from every walk of life. If you were nice to me I didnt care if you wore a trench coat, were 200lbs over weight, had goofy teeth... whatever the majority uses to seperate. Its worked out well for me later in life, people who were routinely were not "IN" are now people like my most trusted mechanic .
