I know this is probably a stupid  question but does it hurt the reel to dip it into the water? I have tried really hard the past few weeks wading for crappie. It would be a lot easier to just put it into the water when I am putting a fish into the fish basket. I just don't want to ruin a perfectly good pflueger president by putting it into the water.

Normally you would probably want to avoid dipping your reel at all costs, but that being said, it does happen from time to time and it will still work. Just like Tom said, you would probably just want to take it apart and clean it ASAP if you do dunk it. When it does go under, it is up to you as far as whether or not you should keep fishing with it for the rest of the day or if you need to immediately put it aside until you can take it home and clean it out. I imagine that decision comes down to the water ur fishing too. If it is crystal clear, I personally would continue fishing after I dipped the reel and just make sure to give it a good cleaning that night. If the reel takes a swim in a really muddy pool, I'd probably sideline it for the rest of the day until I have a chance to wash the grit out. In the end, your reel will still work fine if it gets wet- thats what they are made for. It simply runs the risk of loosing smoothness and feeling gritty when you turn the handle. That drives some people nuts if they paid a lot for it, but it ultimately still does its job. Ever consider getting a cheap $5 reel at a garage sale to dedicate to wading? You could abuse that all you want and never feel bad about it. Dip it all you want, it will still work, but might lose some of its smoothness in the handle and drag and save your pflueger from the same fate.

An accidental quick dip in clear water won't require much short term. If the water is dirty or the reel lays on the bottom I'd have it deep cleaned sooner rather than later. Take reasonable measures to keep the reel from being submerged on a frequent basis. Lay reels out to dry thoroughly after use prior to storing.

Most of the guys I fish with do a lot of wading for smallies. Dunking spinning reels is a common occurance. Nobody I know cleans their reels right after they get wet and we use some nice gear. If it was laying in the bottom of the lake or river for a while, that would be different.

I've had a few of my spinning reels get submerged. I've never had it ruin a reel, and my gear is moderate to high end. If a reel gets dunked, I take my water bottle, rinse it off. If I feel any sand or debris I'll set it aside, if not, I'll keep on fishing. Either way I'll take it home and clean it if it hits the water. That being said, I do soak most of my reels at the beginning of every season before I break them down and clean them.

Saltwater guys spray their equipment down with fresh water after each trip so I cannot imagine that dunking your real on a lake is going to hurt it much. I have done it, we all have done it.

Im glad I ran across this post, My GF's dad was using one of my nicer poles about a month ago and set the hook and didn't realize how stiff the rod was and it slipped out of his hand and fell in the water. He grabbed it out quickly and picked it up again and started using it. Im just glad it didn't sink to the bottom haha! It was in the water for maybe 3 -5 seconds. I still haven't cleaned it but I know I need to. Im going to take it apart today and give it a look. Do y'all think this could effect my reel? Its a Lews Tournament Speed Spool. I have noticed that it is a little bit grittier on my retrieve but nothing too serious I don't think. I think a little Ardent butter and oil will smoothen it back up. I just hope nothing has rusted!

I walk the river and dip my reels in more than I should, don't have problems arise from it. If it stays in much longer than that I do a good cleaning and relube/grease

I would say that it's fine, oil as you would normally on a monthly basis and keep fishing.  I fish saltwater and yes, I hose them down pretty good just to make sure I get all the salt off of them, even if I didn't fish with it, just being in the air you can get salt creep.  And I had a spinning reel end up in the lake after a catfish managed to get it out of the rod holder my son was watching(supposed to have been anyways). Hosed it off, oiled it up and it's still doing just fine.
