Al Wolbach Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Going to Santee-Cooper this spring and want to take a couple of frog baits with me. I have very little experience using them, any suggestions. Thanks.........Al Quote
BassThumb Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 People generally prefer Spro Bronzeye frogs. I use the Snag Proof Phat Frogs just as often. They're both very good baits. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 29, 2011 Super User Posted January 29, 2011 Scumfrog Trophy - better hookups. I'll be there in April as well. From the pics the guys brought back last year, you'll want to use cheapo frogs......gators love them, LOL. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted January 29, 2011 Author Posted January 29, 2011 Thanks for the quick replies, I'll look at them on my next visit to BPS. Thanks again............Al Quote

Staying on the lower lake at a military rest camp next to the dam. That area is loaded with gators. A few years ago I had a 4 footer follow a buzzbait to the boat. He got close enough for him to rest a foot on the side of my boat. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 29, 2011 Super User Posted January 29, 2011 I'll be there the same time, 9th to the 17th. We're at Black's Camp, I think. Quote

CSimon2 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I have tried the BPS Kermy Frog and the Tru-Tungsten Mad Maxx frogs, but have had much better success using Scum Frogs. I went America's Outdoor Show today and bought Larry Dahlberg's Diving Frog and also a frog called the Pad Daddy made by Bizz Baits. The link to their website is below. http://www.bizzbaits.com/ Quote

Bigbarge50 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Snag proof original frog.... the one with the realistic legs Quote
scbassin Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I fish out of Angel's landing on Lake Moultrie, I too am a retired Navy vet. 21yrs Submarine force. I fish the Boze Sumo Frog but have purchased all the colors of the Live Target ones this past fall. I like the way these sit in the water also. Richard over at the store at Short Stay has a very good tackle shop & has good selection of baits including Spro Frogs. It's the 1 to 3' gators that are a pain in the butt. They will chase it right to the boat & will then hang around waiting for to cast & retrieve again. Just smack them with your rod & they will move away for a few min. Make sure to have Senko type baits with you. We will have to hook up while your both here. Quote
WanderLust Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Spro Bronzeye frogs (natural or black) or rage toad. My hookup percentage was much better with the toad but I had some youtube worthy strikes on the Spro. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 30, 2011 Super User Posted January 30, 2011 BPS kermit frogs suck imho..stick to the spro or snag proof frogs. Also the SK rage tail toads work pretty well too.. 8-) Quote
Super User CWB Posted January 30, 2011 Super User Posted January 30, 2011 Scumfrog Trophy - better hookups. X2. Scumfrog Trophy are softest and get better hookups, but they also snag up easier for the same reason. Ish's Phat Frog is easiest to walk and doesn't take on water. Best all-around IMO is Bobby's Perfect. Each has their application. Never liked the Spro for whatever reason. I fish frogs alot and base my selection on the type of "SLOP" I'm fishing. I wouldn't hesitate to throw a Scumfrog over pondscum or moss but would not cast it into reeds or tules. Quote

I'm a retired TMCS. Richard has helped me on each of my visits and was just building up the tackle shop my last visit. We'll make plans to get together as time gets closer...Thanks Al and I always have sloggo's and sinko's Quote
Al Wolbach Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 I'll be there the same time, 9th to the 17th. We're at Black's Camp, I think. We are going to stop on the drive down to fish a tournament on Lake Murray near Columbia. We are driving down the rest of the way on Sunday. If I remember correctly Blacks is on the upper end of Lake Moultrie. That is a good location to fish either lake. We will be there the entire week also. I'll touch base with you as time gets closer, maybe we can get together........................Thanks, Al Quote

weedsnager1 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 check out the new kopper's hollow body Quote
scbassin Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 As I said above I have the Koppers Frogs. I got them late last year & have thrown them to see how they looked in the water. I did not expect to catch a fish & I was right. I mess with for a short time & I liked what I saw. They sit low in the water & look like a frog at rest. The colors are good & the frog is soft so you should get good hook sets. It is getting close to time to find out. Quote
Super User Tin Posted February 1, 2011 Super User Posted February 1, 2011 It's all how you modify them. :-X Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 1, 2011 Super User Posted February 1, 2011 i love frog fishing i got two 370 boxes packed with em cheap scum frogs to ever spro poper and frog you can think of i get hits on all of em just the same the spro and mad maxx cast farther but the cheap scum and snag proof mouse/rats have the best hit to hook up ratio by far even with the new soft body spros Quote
