I thought I would share this first time experience here. I was frog fishing this evening and on top of catching a nice 17" bass, I also caught a decent peacock bass with the same frog as well. Never would I have thought a pea would go after a frog. The pic is over on the "other species" thread.

Is this place canoe friendly? Been reading a lot of articles about this place and would be a dream to fish it. If your ever looking for company let me know I'll be there in a minute. Lol

Just in case anyone wanted to know. US 27 and the alley were on fire yesterday. The water is way down and the fish are concentrated in the canals. Unfortunately yesterday, t-storms were active in the early part of the afternoon. We waited them out under a bridge at the alley. Everyone cleared out, but we stayed til the end of the day. We boated 30 fish. Several 4lbrs, 3lbrs, and 2's. Be safe and good luck out there.

Seen fires along the alley periodically the last few weeks. However it seems it's supposed to be raining hard the next few days... maybe the joys of lower water level are over  :cry4:

I apologize. I didn't mean to say "on fire" literally. I was being figurative. Its not uncommon for the glades to be literally on fire this time of year. my mistake. I will re-phrase. The glades have been awesome for fishing lately!! ;)

BBD... Stick Marsh!!!!! I think that place may very well hold the next state record. We gotta start taking more pics and posting them. Wish we could have seen those couple fish you and myself lost. Can't wait for the next time!!!

Hi everyone, new guy here. just got into bass fishing a month or so ago and I've been reading all the great articles and information you all have here. Its quite a wealth of information!

Im thinking about getting a kayak and trying my luck in the everglades and surrounding canals for bass and maybe snakehead. Any general recommendations on articles \ youtube videos \ discussions? Any bad experiences on a kayak and an alligator? I hope the answer is no to my latter question.

My PB is 2.5 lbs from the canal in the back of my house so i wait to catch something like a +4 lbs bass.

thanks!

update: I googled a little more and found my answers, but in any case if you have any additional recommendations im all ears. According to youtube and articles, I should be fine as long as I don't plan on fishing with a small dog in my lap and respect them.. seems like common sense to me.

I'm not to sure of that advice. Just recently purchased a canoe ad have already had a few minor issues. A lot of these places that hold gators where your launching at are used to people and don't have a fear of you. They will swim right up to you and snap at anything your put in te water including paddles. Kind of hard to relocate yourself whe your not able to paddle. I don't think they will come and just lunge at you or into or on your kayak but I personally don't think a kayak is the way to go. At least with my canoe I have side walls to protect myself and put a barrier between myself and the gators. Kayaks tend to flip a lot easier and I don't think swimming to shore to upright yourself and get back in is something you wanna be doing with gators present as well. Just my opinion. I'm sure many guys will tell you it's plenty safe. I've had a couple run ins where I ran a couple over and their first reaction was to snap at the canoe and paddles. When one took off it even made the canoe unstable for a moment of butt clenching fear.

C-14 welcome aboard, I have seen you around the forum but I was curious when you were going to start posting. Kayaks can be useful down here in several areas. However, in the Everglades?? I personally will not do it either. Gators can be very curious sometimes. You tell me a small aluminum boat like a 10 footer, then yes, have had it. Best way we can help you is by you asking questions as the situation comes up. In the meanwhile, take advantage of this site and watch the vids and read the vast amount of articles. See you around. ;)

I'll agree with that. The fish you guys were hooking into were pretty big. I was to preoccupied with learning the ways of shaky heads lol.

Next time I get some money im getting a lews 7 ratio/mh berkley 7ft/ 50lb and going cranking. Lipless cranking until I find what im looking for. Dont care how many xcaliburs I lose in the process of finding the big one i want.

BassinLou, thanks for your help! you got me, I was lurking :lurk:  I knew there had to be a reason i didn't see any kayaks out there. So where would you say kayaks are useful as a fishing platform down here?

Shanes7614, yea I agree with you. I love nature and all but I also like my place on the food chain. I just wanted a way to get to some fish besides the bank fishing I am doing without having to buy a boat. Got any suggestions for bass fishing in s. florida?

LMAO, that video is crazy :dazed-7: . IMO, I wouldn't be taking a kayak in the everglades. To low to the water level. The gators out there are no joke :eyebrows: . Local waters in neighborhoods is where I would stick to.

yup..I was thinking of a hobie kayak (PA 12 has a seat which is a little higher off the water level) but after I saw a couple video's from a guy called Capt. Shane with titles like "Gator tries to eat me" and such I pretty much decided my local canals and bank fishing is good enough for now.

Im sure the kayak is still a good option, but probably not in the glades.

Only time I would be really afraid of gators is when a female is on Eggs. Mess with her she will eat you. The rest are predictable usually.

Hey guys,

New to the forums. South Florida born and raised and been fishing since a little kid and just recently started getting back into it. Have gone to holiday park a few times and I usually only catch 5 or 6. Mainly throwing just plastic worms and a few small spinners. Wondering what everyone recommends for this time of the year. Will probably head there next friday, 6/13.

Thanks!

Too up your numbers I would throw a 4 inch senko on at least 20 pound braid and throw it back in the cover.  Your need the line to get it back out of the thick stuff.  Fish it slow and be a line watcher.  Weightless with a #3 Gama hook will go through the weeds easily.  When it hits the water let it sit.

C- 14 like you have mentioned in some of your other posts. Your kayak is highly portable, and there are endless canals and lakes that you can put in and do very well in. Good luck ;)

I'll be getting a jonboat...no trolling motor though. Hopefully the water will be low and fairly steady.

Sounds like a good idea. I was reseaching that park and found this groupon for $35 bucks for 5 hours on a jon boat. http://www.groupon.com/deals/everglades-holiday-park-15

I picked one up and hope to use it soon.

That's a nice groupon. Holiday has been great. Utilize that groupon soon. When the summer rains begin and the water rises in the glades, the fishing slows down again.
