Larry C. Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Good for you!!! It's pictures and videos like this that keep me going. Congratulations!!!! 1 Quote
FishingFLA Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Wow, what a fish! What have you guys in the south florida area been using? I've been coming up empty a lot the last couple of weeks (seems like the bite really shut down!) Only thing that's caught me fish in my canal is a jig. 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 25, 2014 Super User Posted April 25, 2014 Any bass I catch is by accident, I'm only fishing for peacocks. I'm using crappie jigs black works well, bass love them too, small enough to fish weedy areas. Quote
FishingFLA Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I just got into fishing over the summer so I don't know the spawning patterns very well. In South Florida are we in the post spawn stage? Quote

I've never used one before and I am trying to catch peacock bass. I have a lake near by that is filled with them and they never hit my lures. Quote
Super User MCS Posted April 25, 2014 Super User Posted April 25, 2014 I understand a crappie jig is cheap and affective. But anyone ever use falcons fancy peacock jigs or even spro? Something bigger? Quote

I could be wrong but when I was in Florida the last week of March some of the big bass I caught were spawned out so I'm guessing it would be post spawn now. Some of the locals would know better than me lol. Quote

SFL BassHunter Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Got skunked at tropical today. Not having much luck this week. Quote
ccummins Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I'm not bass fishing per se, I'm on a quest strictly for peacocks in my area. I went to a place where I'm sure peacocks inhabit. I see some good looking water and sight cast, nail a mayan cichlid that took me all over the canal, maybe weight 3/4 lb., my highlight of the day, I thought it was a pea at first. The bass were all over the place there, I catch a few in very short order 3-4# using only a crappie jig. Had I used a senko (which I had a rod prepped in the car) I do believe it would have been one hell of a day. Nothing quite like going after the mayan cichlids on light tackle. IMHO they have 3x the fight of bluegills ounce for ounce / inch for inch. Quote

I have a lake near by that is filled with them and they never hit my lures. I make my own on a 1/8 jig head, better quality hook. I do use the Walmart ones quite a bit too, they seem only to come in white or chartruese and both work good, 8 for $1.50 or so. These are the ones I make up myself. Nothing quite like going after the mayan cichlids on light tackle. IMHO they have 3x the fight of bluegills ounce for ounce / inch for inch. On a size basis I think the Mayans fight harder than a peacock. Sure I prefer snook, tarpon and jacks, but these little fish are a real nice diversion for me. I could never land a jack of the same size as a peacock on my peacock gear. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 MC's are tough fish that's for sure. I have been catching some big ones lately. They have been nailing my spinnerbait. Even on M/H tackle those big ones really put up a fight. Quote

Do you reel it in really fast or do you move it up and down? Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 26, 2014 Super User Posted April 26, 2014 I usually swim them but never too fast. Sometimes I just drag them on the bottom or shake them in place. Quote
Super User MCS Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 hey guys just a few pics from the past 3 weeks Ak and I Nice fish. Looks like you only leave ak the little ones lol. The 4th fish down is a beast, imagine it with weight or full of eggs. Good catches Quote
zachb34 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Went to 20 mile bend today the grass was really high, higher than I've ever seen it there we only got a few small fish and a decent mud fish Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted April 27, 2014 Super User Posted April 27, 2014 I stepped out for a little bit yesterday late afternoon early evening. For the first time ever while fishing, 2 on spinnerbaits on 2 consecutive fish broke right at the line tie. On one I salvaged the blades, on the other I salvaged the skirt. I lost a spinnerbait the same way last month. So 3 booyah spinnerbaits in a 1 month period of time, is making me think on going custom built. The booyah's caught me several quality fish, and yes I had to carefully tune them back after each catch, but 2 have break on 2 fish that were less than 1lb each has left me scratching my head on the quality of wire that is being used. After that debacle i lost a nice 3.5lb 20" + fish on a swim bait right at the bank. Soon after that, I fell climbing up the steep bank of the canal and hurt my right shoulder. Adventurou, and $$ costly canal trip that's for sure. Quote

JellyMan Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I got tired of searching out Bass here in the Gainesville area so I have made a few small changes to satisfy my needs... Going out again this weekend. 3 Quote

I do enjoy bass fishing, but once the weather gets hot and humid bass fishing is not where I want to be. With all this saltwater around me, how can I not take advantage of it. Nice reds, always love catching them. Quote

Iv'e had good luck with them in the limited time I used them but others claim they are real nice. Quote

He managed to make a custom color I wanted, and it made its way to color that he will be offering 1 Quote
