Motorguide Brute 756 Help?

I got a good deal on a Brute 756 last week, so I took it out today for a maiden voyage.  Works great, and it has no problem pulling my boat - plus it was a good excuse to go to 24V!

 

I've looked and looked and looked, and I CANNOT find a manual.  Considering it's an older motor, I'm hoping some of you on here have experience with it and can lend some wisdom.

 

1) I don't see any way to adjust the steering tension.  Is there?  Or will I just have to get use to the feel of it.

2) She whines a bit, especially in 4th and 5th gear.  It's not bad, but if there is anything I can do to silence it, I'm all ears.

3) What is the 6th speed setting for?  It's a little worn out, but it looks something like a steering wheel?  It doesn't do anything.  The simple answer is that it's "Off", but there is already an off switch on the foot pedal.

 

4) Also, it has the Motorguide Gator Mount.  There are two big knobs on the side that control the angle at which the motor goes into the water.  Is it ok if they stay a little loose?  When tightened down, the motor will not stow flat.

 

Sorry, this is a lot.  I'm a first time foot-controlled trolling motor owner.

Before I bought my new boat I had 4 Brutes on different boats.

There's really no tension adjustment but you can back the pinion gear off about a quarter turn to get a tighter fit to the rack. It that doesn't fix it you need new cables. The shaft bearings are also known to go out and can cause play in the steering.

It's hard to say what the whining is but I would look at water getting in the foot rusting a bearing.

The 6th speed is another off setting. It should look like a stop sign.

If your cables are ok and there isn't enough resistance for you on your steering there is this option : http://www.trollperfect.com/Pages/default.aspx

I haven't used one but they get pretty good reviews.

 

The 6th speed is an off position. I know the older ones used to have a stop sign shape, where the newer ones had a symbol like the one you described.

 

Those big knobs control your break away tension. It's so if you hit something with your tm it will swing up and hopefully over it instead of just bending the shaft. Those brackets are slightly temperamental given that it doesn't take much of a turn from the break away to go from loose to pretty tight. You don't want it set too loose otherwise your TM will be swinging in and out Try to set it up so it takes about the same pressure to make the tm break away as the power that it puts out. That way when you do hit something you can turn your tm on high, point it in the opposite direction that it folds under, kick it on high, and it'll return to normal running position. (hopefully that made sense)

my gear that comes out of the indicator  lost some teeth does anyone know where I can find this part. been on line all day just no luck. it's a brute 756.

Go online and look up Trolling Motor Doctor, Lynwood, CA. Give them a phone call he has lots of parts and knowledge regarding your trolling motors.

Anybody have a 756 brute motor guide trolling motor i have one and a wire is jumped to speeed select switch and i need a picture of how the foot pedal wiring is supposed to be hooked up please
