Bass fishing is still quite a ways down the road for me in Wisconsin(May 3rd), thankfully the brown trout cooperated this weekend. I caught some really pretty fish, mostly on a 1/16th oz. Rooster Tail, which is an in-line spinner. I was really having trouble hooking the fish the first outing, so the next time i swapped out my flouro for braid with a flouro leader and bent out the trebles slightly (still having a lot of trouble LOL).

The pictures of these trout are from my second outing. I caught maybe around 10 brown and brook trout in total but only quickly snapped pictures of a few to get them back in the water.

The next picture, sorry that it is not a good one, is a picture of the back of my head. The spinner, well, took an unexpected flight path, and pierced through the hood of my sweatshirt into my scalp. I was lucky enough to only get 1 point of the treble in the skin. So after a brief moment of surprise and shock, I laughed it off, pulled it out with my pliers, and kept fishing!

Pretty brownies! Last time I got hooked was fishing for trout as well, only mine was because I was dumb enough to try to take a picture of the 18" brown I'd just caught with my Erratic shad still in her mouth. She flopped and slimed out of my hands and buried a hook in the process. Thankfully her next flop ripped it right back out so I didn't have to worry about how I was going to get it back out.

Where in WI are you? I'm currently in the Menomonie/Eau Claire area. I picked up trout fishing about two years ago too. Some pretty good trout fisheries around here. Decent lakes for bass too I suppose.

Never know what path those pesty inline spinners are going to take when you cast them.

Glad it wasn't serious.

Thanks guys, I got lucky, could have very well ended much worse.

Thanks! As fun as they are to catch, it seems trout are bad luck to bass fisherman!

Ugg. I don't look forward to hooking myself....but I guess we all do it sometime. I'm new to the sport so I guess it's coming. I like your humor about it.

Pinch the barb down on all your hooks so when it does happen it will come right back out as easy as it went in. You might lose a fish or two because of it but it's well worth it to save the trip to the ER. Plus you might save a big fish at some point because the hook comes out easy so you do less damage to the fish while removing the hooks.

Um... no it's not.

Just shove the hook the rest of the way through and clip it.

Then again, I've been known to give myself stitches too.  Some think I'm not quite right... :eyebrows:

Just make sure you're up on your tetanus shot.  You should be anyway!

And when you bury the hook up to the bend with no way to push it through???

Pushing a hook through can be a good way to get a hook out in certain parts of the body, it's also a very good way to do serious nerve and tendon damage in other parts of the body.

More than once I've had the hook buried as far as it will go with no way to do anything with it but pull it back out the way it went in. If I had pinched the barb on my hooks down, it would have been an easy process, but I hadn't so it's either do the line trick or go to the ER.

Agreed on the tetanus shot, they're a must in this sport.

I wasn't exactly serious, though I guess that didn't come through well.

My preference is to keep the barb.  I've hooked myself before, but not seriously.  I accept that there can/will be more serious consequences if I hook myself and the barb is not bent, but I've fished barbs before that I crushed down and the results were not great.

My biggest concern is hooking the eye, but that's also why I wear sunglasses.  Everything is a risk and everything is a trade-off.  In this instance I believe that the risk does not warrant the action.

Your mileage may vary and I'm in no way trying to "dis" your methods.

Regards,

Josh
