Sellus Rods

I am on a pretty tight budget so I wanted to get some opinions on the Shimano Sellus rods if you guys don't mind. Anything else around here that is in the price range is Abu's Vengence and Berkley's Lightning shock.

IMHO, the Abu and Berkley rods are better built, and they have decent performance. I like Shimano rods just fine, but I have not been impressed with the Sellus. I have handled a lot of rods in stores over the last 25 years and I struggle to remember one with more obvious guide alignment issues than the Sellus. I never bought one because of this. I do however have plenty of experience with the next rod up, the Convergence. Those are great rods for $60. But for $50 get the Abu or Berkley or hand pick a Sellus to make sure it's straight.

I had a 7'2 sellus spinning rodI was going to throw a small swim bait/flukes on. I watched a couple of different fish come up hit the bait and swim off with it and never felt anything. It sucked I got rid of it

Haven't fished one, but I was at Cabela's yesterday and looked at the Fenwick Eagle GT line.  Personally liked the looks and feel much better than the Sellus.  As others have stated, the Lightning is a very good rod in its price range.

If ever the chance check out a Calico Jack, my favorite freshwater rod.

X whatever for the lighting rod.....  for the money and that $ range, they're hard to beat.

Only Sellus I got us the 6'8 I got for top water and it does it's job well. I wouldnt use it for much mOre

I have a sellus in 6'8 MH casting and just upgraded to a black *** and what a difference i never thought comfort was that important until i made a change and noticed it. I was in a bind for money at the time and needed a cheap rod for my new reel, But i caught some nice bass and it held up if i only fished a few times a year it would be ok but if you have the money and fish often id search for something else.

I had a Sellus and liked it until it snapped in half! I also have a Shock and love it! Never had any issues at all with it. WalMart sells them for 39.99 in the stores and that way you can handle it and check the guides. I recommend it. You won't be disappointed!

I have a Sellus rod that I use for topwaters and love it. That said, depends on what you use it for -- the other rods mentioned might be a better fit.

I am looking for a casting rod for smallmouth. I am thinking 7' and need it to be as "universal" as possible for throwing topwater, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and soft plastics. I had intended on buying something at the $100 price point but attended a local outdoor show and snagged a new in box Curado 200e7 for $85 so now I need a 2nd rod for it as well am my 50E.

I don't know why I didn't mention it but you can't beat the powell diesels on sale for 50ish right now on a couple of online stores. I've got six and I'm about to order another one. I could fish more expensive rods but these fish out of there price range for me. I replaced all of my shimano compre's with these rods

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  How come I never can find a deal like that?  Congrats, man.  Great buy.  Picked up a 201E this winter, but sure didn't get anywhere that swell of a deal....and it was used.  Have had my 51E a couple years and love that reel.  It has found a permanent home on a Fenwick Smallmouth 6'10" MF.  Haven't decided where to put the 201E.  Sounds like you haven't used the 50E yet.  I think you are going to love that little reel.  DVT cleaned mine before I ever used it.  Sings to me on every cast. 

 

I have no idea how good the Sellus rods are.  I just know I didn't care for the looks of them nearly as well as the Fenwick Eagle GT.  Of course, you can't fish looks.    BUUUUUUT, I know from personal experience that not liking how a rod looks can take some of the enjoyment out of the fishing experience.  The Lightning is a plain rod, but I like it better than the Sellus as well.  Could be because I am not a fan of white rods.  Then again, I can't stand the looks of a Skeet Reese rod either.

I guess being in Canada is good for finding a good deal every now and again. I will say that a large majority of bass fishermen (smallmouth as we have no largemouth) up here don't use baitcasters so deals can be found...btw, what is a good price for a Calcutta 50B? (I think it was a b ).

 

In the rod department pickings are slim. Shimano sellus start at $60, convergence start at $80, no one local selling Fenwick anymore, Falcon, Duckett, Dobyns and Powell are unheard of. Having a rod shipped in costs about $45 so I have to limit myself to local shops or on a very limited selection on Amazon Canada (free shipping). Sure wish you guys could see what our Walmart has compared to the US ones. You'd die laughing.

 

Be lucky you have Academy, Gander, BPS and the rest. It really sucks not to.

 

I haven't used the 50E yet as I am still trying to find a decent rod for it. Still cold with snow on the ground and the lakes are still iced up. One step at a time!!
