TorqueConverter Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 The Curado is a great reel. Generations of it come and go. The Curado is discontinued for a reason. The reason being that Shimano released new gen. I'd like to see the old Curado design continue to live as a low end, sub $100 reel. Caenans are kinda junky. Quote
SCangler91 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 You should be able to find the Lews Tournament MG online for $100. Great reel for the money IMO. You have plenty of decent options at that price range though. Quote
NorthernAnglers Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Im all for Abu Garcia but d**n my brother had lews and the 99$ one is a hell of a good reel Quote
mac_hine Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Lews Speed Spool for $75 from an ebay store, spend $25 on more tackle. I'd suggest this or that you go with an Abu Garcia Revo S. 105 with free shipping for gen 3 and 103 for gen 2 with free shipping. I think you'll like either the RevoS's or the Speed Spool better than the Orra. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 12, 2014 Super User Posted March 12, 2014 It's discontinued for a reason Not to get into a slugfest here, but this shows you haven't been reading fishing forums for very long. It also tells us that you have never fished a Curado E reel. Many people consider the E series replacement not to be as good as the E series. Lews and Daiwa thanked Shimano after they came out with the E's replacement. Not saying that the E series were the best reel ever, but they were excellent reels 5 years ago, and they are excellent reels today. What made them good reels then hasn't changed today. Maybe you should look into how much some of the older Daiwas are going for. My Purple Alphas is around 10 years old, but that reel is a favorite of mine, and I would put it up against many of today's new reels. Couldn't tell you how old my Black Max 1600's are, but they will throw light lures into a strong wind just as well as most new low profile reels and better than some. Manufacturer's are continually coming out with new models to entice buyers...both new and repeat buyers. They have to if they want to stay in business. New isn't always better. I would love to be able to walk onto a dealer's lot and buy a new '66 Avanti or '65 Vette. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted March 12, 2014 Super User Posted March 12, 2014 My vote goes to the Lew's reels, and then the others come in second! Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 12, 2014 Super User Posted March 12, 2014 For this year I'm winging it with the quantum code red and the US REEL Super Caster baitcasters on a few setups. Next season I'll upgrade again. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 12, 2014 Super User Posted March 12, 2014 BPS Pro Qualifier hands down. Haven't tried the $99 Lew's Speed Spool and have never heard anything but great reviews for it. Those two are the cream of the crop for reels at $100 or under. Quote
5fishlimit Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I'm looking for a Reel in the 100 dollar range. I'm looking at a, Lews Reel or a, Abu Garcia Orra SX Reel. Which one would you guys get? I know i could get the a Pro Qualifier, but with shipping i'd rather have the other 2 opinions For $109, and free shipping, you can grab a Daiwa T3 Ballistic at Tackle warehouse. This reel is head and shoulders above the ones that you have listed. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 12, 2014 Super User Posted March 12, 2014 It's discontinued for a reason Shimano is introducing the next generation I Series, it's as simple as that. As the leader in the field, Shimano will continue to introduce new products and improvements. Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 The Curodos are discontinued. I don't think i want a reel that's discontinued. I'll keep doing the Reel search. I really haven't decided yet. I could agree if it was a pfleuger, quantum, etc because odds are when they break in 5-6 years parts will be hard to find. But when that curado breaks in 15 years there will still be parts for it. I think daiwa and shimano are about the two main companies that still have parts like that. Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 TW still has the Daiwa T3 Ballistic for 109 instead of 250$. I would say thats the best deal out there. 1 Quote
bassmanohio Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I just bought a Pinnacle Producer from TWH for $89.99. I live in Ohio and our winter has been rough this year so I haven't been able to use it . I have taken it outside and thrown it around the yard and I love it. Also my fishing buddy also has a Pinnacle not sure the model but he also loves his. Hopefully this helps, Quote
BasstotheBone Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 At the 100 dollar range for lews I would look online for the tournament MG, The new orra is nice except it is mag breaks only, which is not too bad, but for like 65.00 on an auction site you can get the previous model daiwa exceler which has the mag -z breaking. Mitch I agree with this post. I have a Tournament MG, but I also own 12 Lews Pro Speed Spool and 1 Tournament Pro Speed Spool. I love every single reel by Lews. Very smooth, light weight and the braking systems are excellent. You will not be disappointed. Quote
DBL000006 Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 After reading your guys posts. I do like the Lews Speed Spool Reel. I also like Abu garcia Reels though. When i 1st started to use Bait Casters. I bought a Silver max, just to see where it will take me. I'll say this, that 60 dollar Reel is pretty nice for 60. Abu Garcia makes great reels. I may lean towards the, Revo 2 Gen 2. I believe it's the Left retrieve. I just don't like the all white reel. Can you get those in different colors? Anyway the posts are great guys. If i was on the water every weekend fishing to put food on the table. Well, 200 dollar revo will get my attention. I don't finish like that. Small tournaments nothing big. Quote
Mattfrom_NJ Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I just bought a lews speed spool new off amazon for $85. Decent deal I think Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 12, 2014 Super User Posted March 12, 2014 I may lean towards the, Revo 2 Gen 2. I believe it's the Left retrieve. I just don't like the all white reel. Can you get those in different colors? Do you mean Revs S Gen 2? Gen 2 refers to the Generation of the reel. The current model is Gen 3. Available in white only to the best of my knowledge. Both Generations come in right or left hand retrieve. Right hand retrieve will be listed as Revo S. Left hand retrieve will be listed as Revo S-L. Although I have a couple Revo baitcast reels none are the S model. I have read good things about them, tho. Quote
DBL000006 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 I have another week or 2, before i decide on what reel i want. I will say this, I'm sure Lews is a great reel. I have 2 Abu Garcia Reels and they're very good reels. These reels are the lower end of their other reels. I'm going to buy the higher end reels for now on. Last year i got back into bait casters. Abu Garcia, made this very easy for me. I just love how the Abus are setup. I'm used to them, so i think i'll be buying an Abu. Just personal feel more then anything. Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Your not going to get a "high end" reel for a 100 Quote
jhoffman Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 The t3 I agree is the best deal at that price right now. Normal pricing its the pro q, it has a fully machined aluminum frame, not a cast one. It really also depends on what gear ratio you are looking for, you cant get all these reels in say a 5.3:1 Quote
DBL000006 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 6.4.1 ratio is fine by me. Plus i'm a lefty. I like abu garcia more Quote
Justin Clark Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I'm looking for a Reel in the 100 dollar range. I'm looking at a, Lews Reel or a, Abu Garcia Orra SX Reel. Which one would you guys get? I know i could get the a Pro Qualifier, but with shipping i'd rather have the other 2 opinions Lew's hands down. Quote
masterbass Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Honestly in the this price range, you can't lose with a lews, pro qualifier, revo s, or curado g. I own 2 speed spools, a tournament, a tournament mg, pro qualifier, revo sx and my newest acquisition the t3-b. They are quality reels and I like them all. I do feel like I got the best deal on the t-3b though. 1 Quote
JLeon77 Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 For $129 you can get a Lews Tournament MG and you won't find a better reel for that price. I have a Revo S and an Okuma Komodo and the Lews is my favorite. Quote
