Other Hooks On Crankbaits

So we all know most crankbaits come with treble hooks. I read in the thread on circle hooks that some companies use them on cranks and have seen them on lures mainly in Australia.

I've had fish throw hooks quite a bit on my smaller topwaters and don't really like that thought of treble hooks coming at me a hundred miles per hour.

Two questions what are the pros/cons of using non trebles on hard baits and can you use non circle style hooks ie a straight shank worm hook?

Yes.  It's not uncommon to see straight shanks on some cranks right out of the box.  I've seen it on some Japanese cranks targeting wahoo

 

I'm not sure how they'd hookup when bass fishing.  If you're concerned about safety, crush down the barbs on your hooks.  You'll actually get the hooks deeper into the fishes mouth than with barbs and can still have a good if not improved land ratio over barbed treble hooks.

I have changed out many of my hooks on crankbaits to circle hooks. I find that they get hung up a lot less than trebles. I have only caught a few fish on them (not very proficient with crankbaits yet) and they seem to hook up fine. I know that Yo-Zuri sell lures that come with circle hooks.

safety glasses doesnt stop a 100mph lure headed for your leg, arm, body, etc...i know from experience last year. had a crankbait fly out of a tree after i jerked it, went 100mph into my leg. luckily not past the barb. but the way the hooks were in, pulling on one to get it out, pulled the other treble into me. for this reason alone i finally bought some side cutters for this season. wouldve been much easier to cut those hooks out then pull them against each other with pliers...

Now I basically keep a miniature bolt cutter handy that should cut through a heavy hook like butter. I know they will get used eventually, Its just part of playing the game.

I had a 3X strong treble go through my fingernail and finger last year and did not own a large enough plier/sidecutter to get it cut. yeah, my experience doesnt sound as bad as yours, as after piercing my tshirt and jeans the front treble barely went into my leg, atleast not past the barb it didnt, and the rear treble went through my shirt and jeans and the hook stopped in my back pocket. what made my situation difficult was the way the hooks were embedded. if i pulled one end with the pliers trying to rip it out of my clothes the other treble wanted to bury itself further. it was a tough deal with only needle nose pliers. if i had the cutters then i could of just cut them out quickly and got back to fishing, and not had to worry about if pulling one treble out was gonna pull the other one in. i bought the cutters for the sole reason of if i buried a hook into myself somewhere. also, next time my uncle says lemme pull the boat over there to that tree limb and you can get your lure out of it, im gonna let him do it instead of insisting on yanking it hard a few times...

I don't see the advantage of using a circle hook on a hard bait. Actually, I think it would hinder hook ups.  The same goes for single hooks vs. trebles. The advantage of a treble hook is it's ability to hook despite the lures positioning in the fish's mouth.  I used SureSet hooks for a while as replacements for the front of my cranks and can honestly say that I hooked as many fish on the smaller hooks as I did on that large one.

Unless the bait your using is weight critical / suspending bait - there is a very good chance that replacing the stock hooks with 

Mustad KVD 1x Strong 2x Short Triple Grip Treble Hook will Greatly improve your hook up and landing rate.

 

These hooks are slightly heavier when replacing hooks of the same size - which could effect a suspending baits balance and action.

 

Replacing most average grade stock hooks with any quality after market treble can help but these hooks have improved my over all crank bait fishing dramatically. 

 

Going up one size larger can pay off as well.

What A-Jay said. Although some lures are coming with better hooks than in the past I usually upgrade to a Mustad KVD and a size larger if I can. I like Sure-Set hooks on the tail of most of my cranks.
