FishinChris Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I have 2 rods to trade in at BPS and wanting to get 2 high quality rods. I am stuck between the Avid and the $200-$250 G Loomis rods. Just want to here the different opinions on these. I have the new Curado I and Chronarch CI4 for these rods as well. Thanks!! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 9, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 9, 2014 IMO, the GL2 shouldn't even be in that conversation, they just are not an impressive rod to me but I'm sure other guys love them. The Mossybacks as are the Avids. I really don't think you could go wrong with either one but I've always been partial to the St. Croixs. Always felt like I was paying extra just for a name with the Loomis rods. Quote
Missourifishin Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I love my Avid. I have no experience with the Loomis. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 Can't go wrong with the St. Croix Quote
John G Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I am partial to Loomis. I like how they look and feel. I am sure the Avid is a nice rod too but I don't think that I would like the hump on the grip that some Avids have. Quote
michael68w Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I'd say no to the GL2. The avid is great for money. I know this is said a lot but loomis tends to shine in the IMX range an up though I've used there Bronzeback rods and enjoyed them. I haven't used the mossyback rods so I can't comment but I do have 2 avids and 1 IMX and love them both. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 Go with the Avid, the GL2 is way too high in price for what you get and while the Mossyback is close to the Avid it is also slightly more so getting the Avid would be the way I would go. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 Save yourself a little cash and get the Avid. The other two are not worth it. I paid $136 for my GL2 and $158 for a Mossyback, and I still felt ripped off. There's so many better values out there. Quote
frogflogger Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I bought an 7' avid mh years ago - just rewrapped it - it's caught tarpon, snook and many bass - it's a good rod - I spiral wrapped it for pitching jigs, time will tell if that was a good move. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 I have several gl2 rods (casting) imx... Also avid spinning... I do not like the hump reel seat on avids casting ... The gl2 rods I have.... Are the most comfortable split grip rod handles I have ever used... Also plenty sensitive.. Guide train is strong and old timey... But does the job with honor...I got mine used/ same as new and couldn't be happier they are way strong.... Look at the new imx... It's sweet Good luck Quote
Alpha Male Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Unless you have small hands the hump on the avids is very nice. It gives you a better grip IMO. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 Wonder why Loomis makes so many different rods, when the only good ones are the IMX, GLX, and the NRX. Seems such a waste......lol. Hootie 2 Quote
jtesch Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Avid for sure, in my opinion both the Loomis rods are good but way over priced. You could get a Legend Tourny for the same as the Mossyback and it's a WAY better rod. Nothing against Loomis I just think you have to get to the IMX line or above to find the true great rods. Quote
carlm01 Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 I have 4 Loomis and think they are great rods 2 GL3 and 2 GL2 split grips Ive owned many rods and still keep a couple Falcons too But use the loomis all the time ... 1 Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Cant go wrong with either one. I prefer the grip on the GL2. Buy the one that feels best to you. A 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 Before anything, grab the rod, swing it, if it feels comfortable then you can go thinking about which one you want. Somewhere is a guy proudly owning an Avid rod I aboslutely hated, a friend of mine owns two MagTS Kistlers he got from a guy that purchased them and hated them after a couple hours, you may imagine who that guys is. Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 9, 2014 Super User Posted March 9, 2014 If it's not too late, my advice for the price the Avid is the way to go. Don't get me wrong I like my GL2 and I find that fishing the GL2 is more comfortable for me...but you honestly get more bang for your buck from the Avid. Now if you paid 100-120 bucks for GL2 then I'd say Gl2. Also imy recommendation if you aren't set on both those rods... I'd take a look at the Fenwick Aetos or Elite Tech Smallmouth...strongly recommend them over the Avid. Definitely better bang for your buck. That is if BPS carries them. If you want to stay with Shimano/Loomis look at the Cumara line or Crucial too. Quote
