Organizing Tackle Box

After my fishing partner was making fun of me over how heavy my tackle bag was I decided to do a little organizing.  I took out a lot of stuff, esp crankbaits that I had 3 and 4 of the same color and left just one or maybe 2 of each color.  I think the majority of my problem was worm weights LOL  I probably lightened it by 5 lbs or more just taking out weights! Had a lot of soft plastics that I never use as well.  I think I had everything but the kitchen sink in there! Got it all organized and quite a bit lighter with room to spare! 

 

How often to you guys organize and/or clean out your tackle bag/boxes?

As needed. I have several rooms in the house where gear is stored. Within the the rooms there are various boxes like Plano 3700 series, and soft plastic storage systems. It is all broken down very specifically. I will have everything labeled as to what is contained in that storage device - ie cross tail shads, swing impacts, ribbon tail worms, jerks, topwater, etc.

Things get shifted around throughout the year and as conditions change. I take different things with me in the boat each time I go. So there is more organizing there.

Lastly when I need to get more tackle I may shift things around more or at times sell things that I don't need or have too much of.

Generally it is ongoing process...

usually first day of February I go through EVERYTHING, inventory what I have and see what I need to replace (Plano boxes, soft plastics bags ect...) Managing tackle is a royal pain in the rumpas, especially when I'm always buying and losing lures, worms, or the latest and greatest thingamajigger... and having to keep up with the twins tackle boxes also...  make a man lose all his hair real quick.

In these winter months, it seems like I'm organizing and rearranging my gear every day. And I went to BPS yesterday so I have even more organizing to do

I organize the boat after every trip. I'm not to good at lightening up the load. I'm a tackle junkie!!

All the time, but especially for different seasons. Right now the hot lures

around here are the Red Eye Shad, square bills, jerkbaits and The Rig.

Of course I'm always going to have some jigs and soft plastics, too!

It depends, after fishing with A lot of lures I knew what works for me so I have my keepers, but then there's some non producers I keep in rotation and the new ones I have to add. My box can change up in a day or stay the same for a week.

I try to make myself take out lures I know I probably won't use, but I always have that "what-if" in my head HAHA

after each trip i organize, i have a bad habit of throwing lures where ever they land to save time on the water. and i also reorganize if i buy some new stuff that i dont have room for, out with what has not been producing in with new stuff to try or something i know works.

I can scarcely believe all of the tackle that I used to haul around that never got wet. I must have looked like a walking BPS outlet store. One winter I really tore into it all. Now everything that I use fits into a Plano 9606 and a Pflueger soft side tote with room for seven 3700 boxes and pockets for smaller stuff. Now all of the tackle I carry, I have confidence in.

I use my box for hard baits and tools and use the smaller boxes for terminal tackle. I keep my most popular plastic in a binder and the remainder of them are tagged and organized in pencil boxes from the dollar store and loaded into a gym bag. Everything is to a varying degree of anal retentive priority. I break out wide gaps and t-rig stuff into three different boxes. One for a shore bag, one for the boat and one that is constantly stocked to refill the other two. I know when the "feeder" box is low, it's time to order up. Almost everything else is fed from the same system but hard baits. I keep the house clutter to a minimum by shelving stuff and dispersing it into the tackle boxes. I try to sort of replicate how bps displays their stuff, except mine are on shelves instead of on a wall. It's easier to copy their system than it is to reinvent the wheel. I'm sure they have more people on staff on how to organize stuff than I do. I also try really hard to stay as compact as I can with my most popular items and use the bigger trays and boxes for the lesser used stuff. I'm more likely to spill the stuff I mess with all the time by getting in a hurry than I am on things like crank baits which don't generally rush me like redoing a c-rig or a drop shot.

I just outgrew my 9606 and bought a Cabelas advanced angler tackle bag. It fits everything I have with plenty of room for a while

 

 

 

 

From the left I have 2-3731's for my plastics, 2-3750's one for buzzbaits and skirts and trailers the other for bobber fishing/crappie fishing, 2-3771's for crankbaits and other hard baits, 2-3701's one for jigs and frogs the last one is all for hooks and jigheads. the end side pocket is for my 3607 with spinnerbaits, and the 3600 in the from is all my weights. left front pocket is for line spools and my scale, and the left side pocket is for sunscreen and bugspray.

 

thats all of it.  If you take your time and organize it once you dont have to do it again. wanting you oogle you're tackle under the pretense of "organizing" is your call, I know I do it at least once a week. My weakness is rods and reels. Spooling, switching, and re-spooling.

I keep a ton of stuff at the house in the shop. I've got a large size flambeau blind bag. Cheaper than a tackle bag and the last thing I needed was more boxes. I've got 3 Plano 5-20 boxes one for top water one for crankbaits the other for hooks/terminal tackle. I've got two smaller boxes one holds my flipping hooks and tungsten. The other has my jigs. I keep 2-3 bags of each of the plastics that I'm using at that time of the year.

One side pocket holds an extra reel the other side has 3 spools of line. Pliers and towel hanging off the bag.

I try to tailor that bag to how I'm fishing each time I go. Learned a long time ago there's no reason to haul all that extra junk around. I've got a ton of rods and reels but I only take 4 maybe 5 now instead of cluttering up the boat
