New To Crankbaits

I have not extensively fished many crankbaits in the last few years. Mostly a plastics and spinnerbaits kinda guy here. I have recently succumbed to cabin fever and purchased a few  hard baits. a couple jerkbaits, topwater, lipless, and a number of crankbaits for various depths.

 

My question is; do any of you crankbait guys worry about the split ring that you tie your line to damaging your line? do you ever remove it?

I put oval split rings on all my crankbaits that don't already come with them.  This way I never have to worry about tying in the split part of the ring.   I never fish crankbaits without the split ring.

I use cross lock snaps on my crankbaits so it's never concerned me.

I use snaps on lipped and lipless crankbaits and jerkbaits. I want the bait to be able to wobble freely.If it doesn't have a split ring on it, I put one on. The only baits I tie directly to my line are soft plastics and spinnerbaits (unless they are inline, then I use a swivel.)

Oval rings are nice to use although as long as you pay attention to where you tie your line to the ring you will be fine.

Once you tie the line slide into the slot where it is single bar and sinch it down one more time.

 

I also use a lot of ovals but not on baits that require a large split ring.

 

But dont worry about it cutting your line. Ive though that too. Its never happened to me.

Im just trying to get a feel for the best way to handle these.  I do have some crankbaits that feel like they could benefit from some new trebles. any brand recommendations? red vs black vs nickel? Size of the hooks to body ratio?

A crosslock snap. Don't confuse that with the other ones that have a built in swivel. Some use snaps and some tie direct. Your choice really.

For hooks I like mustad triple grips and for size well that all depends. Some baits you can go up a few sizes. I always usually go up at least 1 size.

I don't fish a lot of cranks, but when I do I like using Norman Speed Clips.

I always tie direct and never had an issue with the split rings.You don't want to use a crankbait without them because it'll hamper the action. With hooks, you can go up in size with some baits, but you kind of have to experiment. Run the bait in the water and observe it and then change hook. If it changes the action at all then you know you went too big.

I remove all my split rings and use Norman Speed Clips.  This allows me to change lures quickly especially when deep cranking with braid as the knot I use for braid is not a quick knot to tie.

As stated, I don't use clips.  I tie direct to oval split rings.  If I did use snaps I would first remove the split rings.  I'm sure some people snap to the split ring but I don't think that's the right way to do it.  Also, if you use snaps you need to be extra aware of your line.  It's much easier to become complacent if you don't have to retie to change baits.  Check your line often and retie when necessary.

at times a snap to a split ring adds a "wider/wilder" movement to the crank - not always - but sometimes - and like the man says check your line often no matter how you fasten the crank to the line.

I was looking at those but opted to use duo-lock snaps since those are more readily available close by at the local Walmart. I didn't really want to drive 35 miles to Cabelas to pick those up.

Change all mine... just did close to 500 over the last few weeks. #5 for small cranks #6 for dd size and topwaters
